Living or Non-living?

Living or Non-living?

Prep Blue enjoyed the brief sunshine today looking for living and non-living things.  Their task was to find them and stand next to them. They found living things as some stood next to trees, leaves, their teacher and one even got so lucky standing next to her sister! Talk about perfect timing!

They found non-living things as some stood next to the play equipment, bench, poles and even a bin! Some were even standing on rocks! Then we celebrated because we nailed it!

National Reconciliation Week 2022

National Reconciliation Week 2022

To mark National Reconciliation Week (27th May – 3rd June) the Year 5 students listened to Thomas Mayor, author of the story book “Finding Our Heart”, explain why he wrote the story. He also read the story aloud during the video we viewed.

Finding Our Heart, A Story about the Uluru Statement for Young Australians by Thomas Mayor | 9781741177176 | Booktopia

The Year 5 students reflected on the 2022 theme of Reconciliation Week “Be Brave, Make Change” and designed posters which included messages about how we, at Holy Trinity and St Mary’s, can work together to treat everybody equally and fairly.

ITALIAN DAY/TRINITY FEAST DAY CELEBRATIONS – THURSDAY 9TH JUNE

ITALIAN DAY/TRINITY FEAST DAY CELEBRATIONS – THURSDAY 9TH JUNE

The students are very excited about our upcoming Italian Day/Trinity Feast Day celebrations. We will be celebrating this day on Thursday 9th June. The theme for Italian day this year is Ancient Rome. In class the students have been learning about life in Ancient Roman times. It would be lovely to see all the students dressed up on the day. Some costume ideas would be: Roman God or Goddess, Roman Emperor, Roman soldier, Roman man, woman or child or a Roman gladiator. A simple toga can be made out of a bed sheet or a costume could be put together simply with an oversized t-shirt, belt, rope or scarf.

Here are some examples:

Here is a youtube link showing you how to make a toga using a bedsheet:

Toga for boys: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8gN3YiMZn

Toga for girls link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4hWqIW–rQ

It is only optional to dress up as a Roman, students can also dress up in the Italian colours – green, white and red if they prefer.

There will be many fun activities organised for the day! We will be having a parade in the morning starting at 9.10am – parents are more than welcome to stay and watch the parade. The parade will be out on the basketball courts. The students will be entertained by the amazing Tim Mason from the Melbourne Magic Academy and will also participate in activities in their classrooms which will be centred around the Ancient Rome theme. After lunch we will celebrate Trinity Feast day mass in the community hall – parents are more than welcome to attend mass. This special mass will commence at 2.10pm.

Looking forward to a great day!

Viva l’italiano!

Year 6 Lego Sessions

Year 6 Lego Sessions

This term the year 6 students have been working really hard on some new LEGO projects. Last week we built a Street Sweeper and this week we are going to build a Light Aeroplane which sounds exciting. After we look  at the project and figure out how to do it, we work with a partner(s) to build the LEGO model. One of the most important parts of the lesson is when we get together on the floor to talk about how the model works and some of the improvements that can be made to make our model work even better. Often we showcase our models for the rest of the class to view but this is optional. Sometimes during our showcase sessions someone’s model may fall apart which can be quite funny but it also shows us that it is ok if something goes wrong. Overall, our Lego sessions have been really fun and I can’t wait for our next lesson!

Here are a few of our Year 6’s showcasing their models …….

Peer Feedback in 2 Yellow

Peer Feedback in 2 Yellow

This morning in Writing, 2 Yellow had a go at providing peer feedback to each other. The students were asked to listen to their partners information report and provide a star 🌟 (something they did well) and a wish (something they could improve on). Giving peer feedback is a useful skill as it allows the students to reflect on the learning intentions and success criteria of the lesson, and provide useful feedback, rather than it just coming from the teacher. Very powerful stuff!

Year 5/6 Science Incursion

Year 5/6 Science Incursion

At the end of last term the Year 5 and 6 students were lucky enough to have visitors from Hand on Science to talk to us about electricity and light. These were two of the topics we learnt about during our term 1 Inquiry unit.

The students were able to participate in two separate sessions where in one session we learnt about electricity and the other we learnt about light.

During the electricity session we learnt how electricity works and how it can exist in different forms. During the light session we learnt about how light can travel through objects and how it reflects.

Overall, our science incursion was really educational but also a lot of fun.

Here are a few photos from our recent incursion.

5/6 Camp Summary Day 1

5/6 Camp Summary Day 1

On Wednesday morning the 5/6s arrived at school at 7.30 am and then departed for Alexandra Resort at just after 8.15 pm. The journey to camp took just under 2 hours but we chose to stop at Yea for a snack before we arrived. We also  had to stop just before camp because there a baby wombat that crossed the road which was cute.

Once we arrived at camp we helped to unload the luggage and then had a safety tour around the campsite. We saw where all the activities were going to happen and where our cabins were. As we were eating our lunch we found out our activity groups and were given a timetable telling us when all the camp activities were going to happen.

Some of the activities that we are going to participate in are canoeing, raft building, flying fox, high ropes course, orienteering, rock climbing, disc golf and gaga ball.

My favourite activities that I have done so far are the water activities because it is fun getting wet.

For dinner last night we had pasta and salad with garlic bread. For dessert we had chocolate moose. Most kids thought the meal was delicious and we would like to have more. We were so well behaved that the chef is going to put on some extra chicken schnitzels for tomorrow’s dinner which we can’t wait for.

After dinner we went for a night walk to search for animals with our torches although most of us did not find too many. The two leading teachers got a bit lost but luckily tghe stuedents helped to put them in the right direction.

Finally, we roasted marshmallows by the camp fire and we went to bed at just after 9.30 pm.

Overall, the first day was fun and we are looking forward to all the activities we are going to have on the other days of camp.

Here is an updated link to our 5/6 Photos Doc that we will continue to add to throughout camp.

Easter Resurrection Alleluia Prayer Service

Easter Resurrection Alleluia Prayer Service

Last week, as a School we celebrated Easter in our “Easter Resurrection Alleluia Prayer Service”. We remembered that Jesus died for us and now lives a new life with us. Jesus is risen and he is with the Church, to teach and guide us until the end of time. We all join joyfully in the world’s ‘Alleluia’.

Easter is too important to last only one day. Over the next few weeks we will continue to celebrate the Season of Easter. The Easter Season is celebrated in the Church for fifty days, until Pentecost Sunday.

Meals

During our stay at Adanac we were served some delicious and healthy food. We got to sit next to our friends in the dining room and enjoy meals with them. Once we sat down, each table was called up one by one to serve themselves. Teachers were also there to help us. On the first day for afternoon tea we had homemade MnM cookies which were extraordinary! For dinner we had pasta bolognese and ice-cream sundaes for dessert. For breakfast the next day, we had a continental breakfast which included toast, porridge, cereal and juices. We ate yummy jam donuts for morning tea and our last meal was a healthy wrap with AFC (Adanac Fried Chicken).

Sleeping

A big part of camp was going to bed in our cabins. For some people, this was challenging as this was the first time they have been away from home. But eventually we all got some sleep. We learnt how to cope being away from our parents and sleeping in different beds.

Alex & Bella B

Flying Fox

One of the highlights during camp was the flying fox. The flying fox was a very long zipline that was above the hill and part of Adanac lake. As you flew down the zipline a rush of exhilaration passed through everyone! We learnt that flying foxes are not as scary as they seem and can be exciting, fun and enjoyable.

Charlotte, Grace, Madi & Alyssa

The Waterslide

Adanac had a giant waterslide that was 110m long. It was really fast, slippery and super fun to slide down. We had to wrap a blue mat around us to stop us from getting hurt or slipping off.  The waterslide had extremely cold water running down it which gave everyone a tiny shock which was very funny. The slide led into Adanac lake where we ‘ended up’ making BIG splashes!

Joshua, Luke & Chavez

Canoeing

Canoeing was one of the most enjoyable activities during camp. It was AMAZING, INTERESTING and FABULOUS! After learning about safety and how to canoe, we played a game called ‘Shark and Seal’ which was so much fun. We got to practice how to steer the canoe with our partners and raced each other at the end. Canoeing looks hard but is actually really easy.

Charlotte, Grace, Madi & Alyssa

Hut building

One of the activities where we had to work together was Hut building. We have to find branches to build a waterproof hut. It was very fun and exciting. After our hut was complete, we all had to go inside and the teachers had to pour a whole bucket of water inside the hut to check if they were waterproof. Our favourite part was trying to find the right branches and watching people get soaked!

Ezekiel & Kayden

Ga Ga Ball

Ga Ga Ball was one of the free time games we played at camp that included everyone. It gave everyone a chance to have a go and try something new. The idea of the game is to stand inside an arena and use your hands to hit a ball and try to get them out. The ball must hit the body below the knees. The winner of the game is the last person left in the arena untouched by the ball. Ga Ga Ball was an entertaining game because when you’re out you get to watch and learn other techniques from the students still playing.

Chris & Tom

Low Ropes

During the Low Ropes course at Adanac, we had to do a Ninja Warrior obstacle. Our first obstacle was walking on a tightrope holding onto a green rope and the last obstacle was balancing on a tightrope holding onto a blue rope. You had to pull yourself back to make the rope stiff for easier balancing. We also had spotters on our left and right sides just in case we fell over. This was a great experience where we got to practise our balancing skills and as well as learning to trust others.

James, Owen & Sam

Free time activities

During our free time at camp, there are a lot of activities that we could do. These included playing foosball, cage soccer, table tennis, Ga-Ga ball basketball, jumping on trampolines and mindful colouring in.

Brianna & Yvonne

Campfire & Night walk

After our delicious dinner on the first night, we went on a night walk with our torches which was led by Mr Kumar. During the night walk some people saw possums and heard animal noises which might have been ‘Fred’ – the famous vegetarian crocodile at Adanac. After the night walk, we had a campfire, roasted some marshmallows and sang ‘Kumbaya, My Lord’.  After the campfire, most people felt tired, sleepy and worn out after such a fun-filled day, so we went back to our cabins and got ready for bed.

Year 4 Camp- Adanac

Year 4 Camp- Adanac

On Tuesday morning, we had a few nervous students (& parents) before the Year 4s headed off to Camp Adanac. The Yr 4s had an amazing first day- canoeing, hut building, low ropes course, water slide, flying fox, night walk & toasting marshmallows over the campfire. We all (eventually) got a good night’s sleep. This morning after packing our bags, we get to do it all again before heading home. We can’t wait to tell you about all the fun things we have done on camp.

HOLY WEEK & STATIONS OF THE CROSS~ PRAYER SERVICE

HOLY WEEK & STATIONS OF THE CROSS~ PRAYER SERVICE

The Prayer Service begins with Holy Week and then the Stations of the Cross. Before the holidays, we used this to focus on and remember the story of Jesus’ last few days. We know that while this is a very sad story, it has a wonderful ending – Jesus’ Resurrection.

You may also like to use this, as a family, in your preparation for Easter.

TORCH Bearer for Term 1 & SRC Assembly

TORCH Bearer for Term 1 & SRC Assembly

On Thursday 7th April, we gathered together as a school community to present our TORCH Bearers of term 1.  To be chosen as a TORCH Bearer is a significant achievement because only one special person in each year level is chosen for this award who consistently displays each of our TORCH values. Our TORCH values of tolerance (T), optimism (O), respect (R), confidence (C) and honesty (H) are at the heart of what we teach at Holy Trinity and provide our students with practical examples of how to live out of school motto of ‘Love One Another’.

Congratulations to Parker (Prep), Primrose (1), Lucas (2), Daniel W (3), Olivia (4), Cara G (5) and Abigail (6) for being such fantastic recipients of the TORCH Bearers for term 1.

In addition, we presented our SRC (Student Representative Committee) members for 2022 with their badges during this assembly. Two students were chosen from each class in years 1 to 5 after writing an application letter as to why they think they would be a good SRC candidate. Students who were interested in becoming an SRC wrote their letters in the Tech Lab at an assigned recess or lunch time and then these letters were read out anonymously in their class by the class teacher. By reading out the letters anonymously this reduces the chances of the voting process becoming a ‘popularity’ contest but rather each student votes on qualities highlighted in the letter of the person they thought would do the best job as an SRC. One student will represent each class at our term 2 meetings and the other student will represent the class for term 3 when we meet at lunchtime each Thursday.  In term 4 our SRC may meet less frequently as we focus our energy on putting some of the initiatives we have worked through in the previous terms into action. Sometimes this may mean we require all our SRCs to help make HT & St. Mary’s the best school possible for everyone.

Congratulations to our SRCs for 2022.

Buddy Breakfast 2022!

Buddy Breakfast 2022!

On Thursday 7th of April 2022, HT & St. Mary’s celebrated our long awaited Buddy Breakfast. Buddy Breakfast is an annual tradition where the students in the Prep and Year 6 levels come together along with their families to have a bite to eat along with getting to know each other. This year our ‘breakfast’ included sausages, fruit and juice. One of the most special parts of our Buddy Breakfast is when the year 6 students present their Prep buddy with a special ‘Buddy Bear’. The purple buddy bear is an initiative from the Alannah & Madeline Foundation helps to let every student know how special they are in our HT / St. Mary’s community. Many year 6 students still have their purple ‘Buddy Bear’ which is a symbol of how special the prep / year 6 buddy relationship is.  It was a great morning that was topped off with some beautiful sunny weather.

Here are some photos from the amazing morning ……

Welcome back BBQ

Welcome back BBQ

Last Thursday afternoon (31st of March) Holy Trinity held a whole school community BBQ, This was a chance for our whole school community to come together for a fun filled afternoon after two COVID affected years. There were lots of different activities that we could do during the afternoon including an Easter Egg hunt, petting zoo, games on the oval, hanging out with our friends and family and obviously there was lots of delicious food to enjoy as well.

The Easter Egg hunt was a lot of fun and involved completing a word scramble as an activity from clues in the Harmony Garden. The clues were on laminated eggs that had a letter on the back. The letters combined to make a phrase and once we wrote this down on our activity sheet we took it to the tent to get an Easter Egg. Another fun activity was that we had a little visit from some furry friends that were from the petting zoo. You had to bring a gold coin donation to go into the petting zoo and you could pat lots of different animals including sheep, a piglet, a goose and if you wanted to you could pat a bunny or guinea pig in a little basket.

Another highlight of the afternoon was the great food which included an ice cream van and BBQ. It was easy to see how popular the food items were because the queue was quite long but it was worth it because the food was delicious.

A big thank you to the Parents Association for organising this fantastic event and for all the volunteers that helped to run the afternoon.

Here are a few photos of our great afternoon together …..
