Year 3 Enchanted Adventure

Year 3 Enchanted Adventure

On Thursday, Year 3 set off to Enchanted Adventure as part of our unit on bridges.
We had so much fun exploring the canopy walk that had wobbly wooden and mesh bridges.
We also saw concrete and pebble bridges in the amazing mazes.
Though most of all we loved the tube sliding, where we also explored force by sliding very fast down plastic tubing which was like a bridge.
We had a fantastic day exploring different types of bridges and how they can be used in something so fun!!!

Year 6 Metro Incursion

Year 6 Metro Incursion

During week 3, the year 6’s were fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in a Metro transport incursion. Matt, a community education officer from Metro transport, talked to us about the different ways we can travel on PTV, (Public Transport Victoria) so that we have experience for next year when we go to high school. The year 6’s learnt how to use a MyKi, the rules of public transport and the safety precautions we should take to ensure we have the best experience each time we travel.  At the end of our excursion we took a test to see how much we had learnt and got the best score out of any school that Matt had worked with (a whopping score of 1,201).

Overall, we learnt a lot from our excursion and we all feel confident that we will have no trouble taking public transport once we begin attending secondary school.

Thank you to Matt for providing this opportunity for the year 6 students to learn about different ways we can travel around our city.

Year 6 Lego Program

Year 6 Lego Program

Late in term 3 and early in term 4, the grade 6 students have been continuing to develop their STEM skills through participating in the Lego Engineers program. We have built made caterpillars, battle tanks, self flipping cars and a wind power plant. In addition, we have developed our coding skills by using the Wedo program on our Chromebooks to program the models to undertake different processes such as to spin faster, make a relevant sound and change colour.

Overall, our Year 6 students have thoroughly enjoyed participating in the Lego program and have learnt a lot of scientific skills and engineering knowledge that will hopefully help us with our learning as we move into secondary school.

Here are some photos of our recent Lego sessions ….

What is World Mission Month?

October marks World Mission Month which celebrities the global work of the Church who support those in need around the world. As a Catholic school we are responding the call of Pope Francis, to be a witness of love in the world.

Pope Francis, in his 2022 World Mission Sunday message, invites everyone to answer the call to be missionary, sharing that “Mission is carried out together, not individually…”.

Mission in action is never confined to a single person or to the present moment, but extends through communities, across generations, and eternally.

Catholic Mission – Reach Out! Give Life!

The Year 5 students have spent time in class learning about mission.

The Catholic Mission agency contributes funding and provides project support to critical church-run initiatives in Africa, Asia, Oceania and South America, as well as remote dioceses within Australia.

Year 5 Fundraising effort

After learning all about mission the students have planned and organised a fundraiser to acknowledge and support the work of Catholic Mission.  The fundraiser encourages the students and our school community to think not only of what they will do to help, but why they will do it.

Our Year 5 students have demonstrated teamwork, fairness, compassion and effort when planning and preparing the fundraiser. There will be three activities which students can participate in. The activities are a “silly sock” design competition, a soccer goal shootout competition and of course wearing “Silly Socks“! All activities are happening on Friday 4th November.

Inter School Sports – Tennis

Inter School Sports – Tennis

On Wednesday 24th of August and Tuesday 6th of September, the students from Years 5 and 6 students represented HT and St. Mary’s at tennis at Mountain Gate.

The students chosen to play tennis were divided up into 2 boys teams, Team A and Team B, as well as one girls team. Team A consisted of mainly Year 6 boys whilst Team B consisted of mainly Year 5 boys. The girls team consisted of both students from Years 5 and 6.

Some of the schools that we played against included Boronia K-12, Kent Park, Wattleview, St Judes and Scoresby. When Team A was playing games on court Team B would be cheering, counting the team’s points or practising and getting ready for their upcoming game. Then Team A and Team B would swap and it was great to receive encouragement throughout the day. Everyone was very enthusiastic even when the other schools were winning.

Overall, it was a very successful and well organised day with all teams winning some games. Well done to all students for their great behaviour and for representing our school with such great sportsmanship.

Here are a few photos of us in action at our games ……

Interschool Sports – Cricket

Interschool Sports – Cricket

On Wednesday August 24th and Tuesday 6th September the years 5’s and 6’s represented Holy Trinity and St. Mary’s at Interschool Cricket. The other schools that we played against included Wattleview, Scoresby, St Judes, Kent Park and Bayswater West and all games were played at HV Jones Reserve at Mountain Gate. We were divided into two team with team A being an all boys team and team B being a mixed team.

We were the first school to arrive at the ground so we had some time to practise our bowling and batting skills. Once all the schools arrived we ate some food and went to our assigned cricket pitches to play our games. Each school had an A and B team and for the first day the A teams played against the B teams.

On day 1 our A team was ‘on fire’ and won all their games while our B team played well but missed out on achieving any victories. However, on day 2 all the B teams played against one another and the A teams played the other A teams from the other schools. The B team showed how much they had improved throughout the competition by winning half of their games and once again our A team won all of their games meaning they were they were the champions of the entire tournament. As Division champion our A team will play against the winners of other Divisions at the cricket District Championship next term.

Overall, it was a highly successful two days for our cricket teams and they represented our school using the same TORCH values that they use at school.

Here are a few photos of our Interschool Cricket teams ….

The Emmaus Production

Earlier this term the students in years 4 and 5 were lucky enough to attend the production of Anastasia at Monash University performed by the students of Emmaus Collage,

So many of our students were amazed by the costumes, the lights, the storyline. Overall most of us thought the Production was amazing and the cast were brilliant!

School Captains Luncheon with Nick Wakeling

School Captains Luncheon with Nick Wakeling

As this is Nick Wakeling’s last year as State Member for Ferntree Gully, the Year 6 School Captains were invited to attend his ‘Annual Junior School Captains Luncheon’.

On the 9th of September, the Captains, Mia, Zeke, Ella G and Nathan, attended the luncheon hosted by Mr Wakeling at the Knox Club. This was an opportunity to meet with other primary school leaders in the Knox area. When Mr Wakeling called up Holy Trinity, we had to introduce ourselves and tell everyone what High School we are going to next year. We shared with other school leaders and their teachers what we do as leaders of Holy Trinity. We told the group about what we may like to do in the future, as a career. Finally, we spoke about what would change about our society. We were nervous about talking in front of everyone, but spoke well.

We learnt about Mr Wakeling’s role, as well as other leader’s opinions and thoughts of being a school leader. We really enjoyed the experience.

Fathers Day Stall

Fathers Day Stall

On Friday the 2nd of September Holy Trinity and St. Mary’s was buzzing with excitement for our Fathers Day stall. This year our Fathers Day stall took place in our Library / Tech area as both the Community and Great Space were being used for our Art Show. The stall felt extra special this year with everyone missing out on these over the past couple of years during the 2020 and 2021 lockdowns.

There were all sorts of wonderful items to buy for our dads, grandpas and other special men in our lives including lots of cool pens, puzzles and there was even a phone jail. The most popular items that were purchased from the stall were sudoku and sumo wrestler bobble head

We are very thankful to all the wonderful mothers who volunteered their time to help both with organising all the wonderful gifts and then to helping sell these items on Friday.

We hope all the wonderful men in our lives have a very Happy Fathers Day.

Here are some pictures from the stall ……..

Mater Christi and St Joseph’s Taster Day!

Mater Christi and St Joseph’s Taster Day!

It was a very exciting day for our year 4 students last Tuesday (30th of August) as they had an opportunity to go to secondary school for a special taster day.  This was a chance for the year 4 students to learn about what life is like at high school as the girls attended Mater Christi College, Belgrave and the boys went to St Joseph’s College, Ferntree Gully.

At Mater Christi the girls made some slime with rubbing alcohol in a science lesson and they learnt how to open a padlock which will be a skill they will need to use when using their lockers in secondary school.

At St Joseph’s the boys made elephant toothpaste and tested out a Tesla coil as part of their science lesson and they  tried out some of the musical instruments which is part of the music program at St. Joes. A few boys commented about the size of a ‘real life’ grand piano.

This is what the students thought about their experience of their secondary school taster day ….

“It was very fun, entertaining and I really like the sport activity.” Liam

“It was an amazing experience and the girls were happy to have us into their community.” Madison

“I liked the science lab and St. Joes was very spacious” Chavez

“It was really fun and the students and teachers were really nice. It was great to see all the art there.” Bella F

“I liked the canteen and indoor basketball court. There as a lot of varieties of musical instruments there.” Sam

Overall, the year 4 students really enjoyed their experience at St. Joseph’s and Mater Christi and are very thankful to the schools for this wonderful opportunity.
