What’s new in Digitech in 2020?

What’s new in Digitech in 2020?

In 2020 there are some big changes in the technology we can use at HT. We have new computers along the wall in the Tech Lab as well as new keyboards and mice. These computers work a lot quicker so that every computer is a lot more reliable. In addition, every student in years 3 to 6 can use their own chromebook in class to support their learning (whereas in the past classes needed to share chromebooks) and for the first time the students in year 2 will have the opportunity to share a set of chromebooks between their classes as well. Every classroom has their own interactive television which is a great way to share our learning together and teachers plan together using their Microsoft Pro laptops. This shows how lucky we are to be students at Holy Trinity & St. Mary’s in 2020.

The Digitech leaders for 2020 should hopefully have some exciting news to share with some of the projects we plan to do with the students during the year. Stay tuned!!!

Sandpit Helpers

Sandpit Helpers

At recess and lunchtime many students like to play in our sandpit. We were lucky enough to have some new toys purchased over the school holidays including new buckets, spades and sifters.  All the students who choose to play in the sandpit really enjoy using these new toys.

At the end of each lunchtime all the students who play in the sandpit should help to pack away the sand toys into the containers so that the sandpit is tidy for the next day. This is the way that we like to pack up our sandpit.

Today when the bell rang some of the students who were playing in the sandpit forgot to pack up the sand toys. Fortunately,  these wonderful students stayed behind to help pack up.

Thank you to Tyler, Rafael, Xavier and Randolph for helping to keep our school tidy.

HT & St. Mary’s 2020 Concert “Carnevale”

HT & St. Mary’s 2020 Concert “Carnevale”

In Italian this year we are already preparing for our school concert. Our theme for our concert will be Carnevale. Carnavale is a great way of celebrating Italian culture by acting and wearing colourful costumes. During Carnevale there are parades with lots of big colourful floats and people dancing on the back of big trailers. Also many people design special masks to wear during this celebration.

Our concert this year sounds very exciting and even though it is not until term 3 we cannot wait for it to take place.

I wonder if we might see some of these beautiful colours in our concert?

Friendship Groups begin for 2020

Friendship Groups begin for 2020

Last Friday we had our first Friendship Groups session for 2020. Our Friendship Groups are formed from a mix of students from different classes throughout the school  Our first session for this year was based on Tolerance which is one of our TORCH values. We gathered as a group and did a couple of activities like being given a piece of string and wrapping it around our finger while we talk about ourselves and when the string was fully wrapped around our finger we stopped so the next person could have a go.  The session was mainly about getting to know each other because some of us were new to the group like the Preps or even some of the Grade 6s.

Here is are some of photos of us in action …….

A great start to Italian/Performing Arts for 2020!

What a fun start to 2020 in the Italian/Performing Arts space! We played a very competitive game of La ruota della fortuna – Wheel of Fortune, and of course some singing and dancing too. The students are very excited about the school production – more news to follow about this soon!

It’s going to be a great 2020!

S.T.E.M. Lego Session

S.T.E.M. Lego Session

Yesterday, six students from years five and six were chosen to build a tower crane model. This model consists of three lego kits and over forty steps to complete. It stood roughly 0.6 meters tall and took an hour and a half to construct. We were lucky enough to have some special Lego Engineer teachers come in to work with us whilst we built this model which we were very thankful of because it was quite difficult to build.

Overall it was an enjoyable challenge working with people that are from different year levels.

Here are some pictures and videos of our models including a time lapse of the building process.

Four Square Competition for the School of the Air

Four Square Competition for the School of the Air

On Thursday the 28th of November Ashley, Lara and Blake.D held a 4 square competition to raise money for the kids in the School of the Air. Ash wanted to do the fundraiser for the school of the air because there are lots of kids that are a part of the school but they don’t get to go to a physical school and experience all the fun things we get to do. Ash and Lara were the first people to do a fundraiser for the school of the air. The competition ended up raising $87 in total which is a lot of money that can be used to help buy new learning resources for these kids.

The final winners were Bradley 1st place, Macca 2nd place and Tej 3rd place. Spencer earned the MVP (Most Valuable Player during the competition and Cara got an award for Team player.

Well done to Ashley, Lara and Blake D for all of your hard work with organising this competition (even organising some trophies).

PA Morning Tea

PA Morning Tea

Thank you to our wonderful PA (Parents Association) for the beautiful morning tea that you provided to the HT and St. Mary’s staff this morning. All staff really enjoyed the incredible array of food and appreciate the time and effort the mums in the PA went to prepare the food and organise the staff room.

We are so lucky to have such a supportive community!

Lego Presentations

Lego Presentations

As we are reaching the end of the school year so too are we reaching the end of our school Lego Engineers program for 2019. The students from years 3 to 6 have participated in this program to develop their skills and thinking based around the areas of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The students have a built a variety of different models from catapults to self flipping cars and moonwalking robots. Their skills and knowledge has developed massively in the two years I have been teaching this program and I thank all the students for their enthusiasm during Lego sessions throughout the year.

Over the last few weeks all classes from Years 3 to 6 have participated in a final Lego presentation session where they got to rebuild one of the Lego models taught throughout this year. In addition, each group created a presentation using the Explain Everything app where they showed how their model worked including explaining the forces used to help make the model function efficiently. The students from the prep to year 3 classes were lucky enough to view these presentations and they gave the groups a mark based on the following rubric.

Overall, the presentations were very positive and demonstrated how much the students had learned. Here are a few pictures of these presentations …….

Transition Groups

Transition Groups

If you were to visit Holy Trinity on a Friday afternoon at the moment you will find that the students are all mixed up into different groups and in different classrooms. The reason for this is because all students are participating in our school transition groups program. This program is designed to prepare the students for some of the changes they will encounter when they move into their classes for 2020. The students work together with different students and with a different class teacher to the one they are currently have. During transition groups the students participate in a range of discussions and activities designed to get them to think about the changes that will take place when they go into their new classes and to help them to see that change is a natural part of life. Our transition program takes place instead of Friendship groups over the next few Fridays.

Here are some of our groups in action ……

Italian poetry/drama competition

Italian poetry/drama competition

On Wednesday 20th November a team of 14 students represented Holy Trinity in an Italian poetry/drama competition at St John the Baptist Primary School in Ferntree Gully. The students had to learn an Italian poem off by heart and present it to an audience using correct pronunciation, expression and drama skills. The students were all fantastic and I couldn’t be more proud of each and every one of them! The student with the highest score for HT was Isabella Bonato and the encouragement award was presented to Chloe Hall. Overall the team placed 3rd. A brilliant effort!

We will hopefully be cooking a wonderful dish in time for carols. Keep your eyes on the blog for more garden updates in the coming weeks!

Stay green thumbs. 🌱👍

Swimming Program

Swimming Program

On Wednesday the 6th of November the students in Prep to Year 4 began travelling to Knox Leisureworks for our yearly swimming program. This program took place for 8 days which finished today. In the first week we did the lessons practising swimming strokes, floating and survival. On each Thursdays all student brought in their PJs. We had to do our swimming in these clothes as well as learning how to survive in the water if we were to fall in with our clothes on.

Today (Friday) is everyone’s favourite day because it is Fun Friday. We got to make whirlpools with the others in our group, did a water scribble and go on the water slide too. It was so much fun.

Overall, we had so much fun in the swimming program and will be sad not to do it next year when we are go into Year 5.

Book Fair

Book Fair

This week there has been a lot of excitement around HT with the Book Fair taking place in the library.

There was multiple choices of books for different ages. Everyone was very generous with their purchasing and we made over $5000 which is an amazing result. A big thank you must go out to a generous father who donated almost $250 worth of books for our school library. As a result of all the great sales Mrs. Taylor will be able to purchase a lot of new books for our school library for 2020 and beyond.

Thank you to all the parents and staff who helped out and of course to Mrs. Taylor for all of her fabulous work to make the book fair available to our school community.

Year 6 Swimming

Year 6 Swimming

On Tuesday the 12th of November the Year 6 students went to Knox Leisureworks to achieve their year 6 water safety certificate. Some of the skills that we needed to do to achieve this certificate included a 25m freestyle, 25m of another stroke and 5 minutes of treading water in clothes.

Mrs Harrison was proud of our efforts with swimming at primary school because so many of our student achieved the certificate.

Overall it was a fun day especially the water polo.

On Thursday the 24th of October the Year 2’s enjoyed a camp experience day at school. There were so many fun activities! We started with a walk around Lakewood Reserve, then made some damper, played frisbee golf and lots of other games! There was some orienteering and a MASSIVE water fight. Ended with roasting some marshmallow before heading home. Whew, what a day!
