District Athletics

District Athletics

On Tuesday 27th April, a group of students from years 3 to 6 were chosen to represent Holy Trinity and St. Mary’s at the district athletics carnival. Our school competed against different schools in the Scoresby District at the Knox Athletics track.. Students were chosen to represent HT & St. Mary’s based on who came first or second during our school athletics day last term.

Some of the highlights of the district athletics competition were the performances of June (800m), Darcy (800m), Amelia F (1500m), Amelia W (shot put), Nathan (200m), Sunny (800m) with many, many more.

Amazingly, we had 17 students who came first or second in their selected events (A Division). These students qualified to compete at the next level where they will represent the Scoresby District at the Division Athletics Competition.

Overall, HT & St. Mary’s came fifth in the Scoresby District which is a a credit to everyone’s hard work.

Overall, Mr. D was very proud of the HT team in their wonderful efforts and particularly the outstanding encouragement they displayed towards both HT students and other competitors.

Narratives in 5 Blue

Narratives in 5 Blue

This term in 5 Blue has been learning about narrative writing and how to make it interesting for audiences of different ages.  Some of us are even publishing our stories for kinder kids and preps!

Mr B has taught us about using an engaging start, having a dramatic problem and a cracking ending to leave the reader wanting more.

Some of the topics we have written about so far include a big fight in a high school, a magic pool, kids that get sent to Jupiter and a Magic Tree that has a wormhole to a whole new land.

The following chart helps to keep everyone on track during our writing sessions and well as to inform Mr. B where each student in up to.

Overall, we are very excited to publish our narratives and we are hoping to put some of our narratives on the school blog in the coming weeks.

Here are some photo of us at work!

Year 5 Government Incursion

Year 5 Government Incursion

Last Thursday, the year five students were lucky enough to have some special guests from the Victorian Parliament visit us as part of our Government unit for Inquiry.

During this session we revised what we had learnt about the three levels of Government (local, state and federal), the process for laws are made and we even got to reenact how laws are made in Parliament.

The best part of our incursion was when we got to decide on different laws by yelling out ‘”YAY” or “NEIGH”! We thank the teachers for organising this incursion and for our special presenters from Parliament for coming to HT to teach us about the different parts of our Government.

Here are a few pictures from the incursion.

Persuasive Writing Year 5

Persuasive Writing Year 5

In year 5 this term we have been learning about writing persuasive pieces, We have been focusing on organising our arguments into paragraphs, using statistics to help strengthen our arguments and using emotive phrases such as ‘I was mortified to realise that’ or ‘it was absolutely ridiculous that’ to help make our writing sound more powerful. The standard of our writing has really developed during this term which should be helpful for our NAPLAN writing in May.

Here is an example of our persuasive writing for this term ……

5/6 Government Incursion Last week

5/6 Government Incursion Last week

The 5/6’s had a great time attending a Government Incursion held in our school last week. The students demonstrated that they knew quite a lot after being involved in learning all about the Australian Government throughout Term 1.
The 5/6’s were guided through a debate, similar to what could be seen in the Cabinet.

School Athletics Day

School Athletics Day

Last Thursday, (4th of March) all students in years 3 to 6 attended Ringwood Athletics track participate in our school athletics day.  This yearly event is an opportunity for students to learn and participate in a range of track and field events and the results are used to guide Mr. D (Our Sports Teacher) in selecting a school team to represent Holy Trinity and St. Mary’s at the District Athletics event next term. Some of the different events that the students participated in were discus, shot put, hurdles, high jump, long jump and triple jump as well as a range of running events such as the 100 metre sprint, 200 metre sprint and 800 metre run. Students competed against other students in their year level and the points they earned from each event contributed to overall house score.  After such a big day a big congratulations needs to go out to all our wonderful athletes and to Bunarong House (Gold) for winning the house trophy.

A big thank you must go to all the wonderful parents who gave up their time to help with the running of the day and for the staff with helping to make the day so smooth for everyone. Well done to  Mr. D and Mrs Patmore for organizing the school athletics day and to Lara for helping Mrs. Patmore with scoring.

Here are some photos that were take in on the day.

5/6 Students Posting on the School Blog

5/6 Students Posting on the School Blog

Recently in Digitech the Year 5 and 6 students learnt about how to create a post on the school blog. Posting on our school blog is a special responsibility given to the students in senior years of the school. It gives ‘us’ students an opportunity to share with the community about what happens in our school from a ‘kid’s perspective’. Each week students from grades 5 and 6 will post on the school blog about some of the learning and events taking place in our school.

Please keep coming back to our school blog each week to view some of the different posts created by our 5/6 students.

Being School Captain

Being School Captain

This year I am one of the lucky enough to be one of the four HT School Captains for 2021!

It is a great privilege to be a school captain because it is a role that many of our year 6 students aspired to be and with it comes a lot of responsibility. As a School Captain I have to take new families on tours around the school, lead assemblies on a Monday morning and even hand out awards at Friday assemblies. Sometimes we have to do random jobs such as yesterday where we were in charge of informing each class when it was their turn for school photos according to the timetable. One of the biggest responsibilities as a school captain is making sure we catch up on our learning when we are required around the school.

Overall, being a school captain is awesome and I am excited for what the rest of the year holds.

What Is Being A Grade 6 Leader Like?

What Is Being A Grade 6 Leader Like?

Being a Grade 6 leader is something that most students look forward to throughout their years at primary school. One of the most exciting parts of being a year 6 leader is that we get to help the Prep students to settle into school as their buddy. We learn that even though we are their buddy we have a responsibility to help the Prep students to learn the school rules and to always try to use the TORCH values. The grade 6’s also help the Preps to find other students in their year level to play with especially on the playground. We spend time with our Prep buddies during special buddy sessions where the Prep and Year 6 classes get together to complete an activity or lesson. We also work with our Prep buddies during Friendship Groups.

Another big role with being a year 6 leader is doing our leadership roles. Some students are chosen to be a Friendship leader whilst others are an Environment, Learning or Arts leader and each position means that we work with a teacher on that chosen area in the school. I am looking forward to being the Liturgy leader this year because it is an important responsibility in a catholic school. It is a great responsibility being a Grade 6 leader and it is much more than just having a special jacket and wearing a leadership badge.

We hope that the year 6 leaders can help to set a great example for all the students at Holy Trinity in 2021.

Friday’s School Assembly (6 March)

Friday’s School Assembly (6 March)

Hi everyone,

Here is Friday’s school assembly.  During our assembly we hear from some of our year 2 students who gave us a good reminder of making sure we show respect for our school by putting rubbish in the red wheelie bins.  We also heard from our sports leaders who will be starting some sports clubs during lunchtimes over the next few weeks as well as recapping our fabulous athletics day (unfortunately this part was not recorded). Congratulations to all our wonderful ‘Student of the Week’ and TORCH award winners who displayed so many great values that we try to use at school.

We are hoping to do a live streaming of our next Friday assembly in 2 weeks time so please keep an eye out for the link to this assembly via our school newsletter, Operoo and our school blog.

A big thank you to Rebecca and Mya for your wonderful photography and video work during Friendship Groups and at our assembly.

What A Time At Waratah Bay!!

What A Time At Waratah Bay!!

This week the year 5/6’s were lucky enough to go to Waratah Bay Beach Camp for an amazing 3 days. Some of the activities we participated in were surfing, the giant swing, aeroball, dolphin dodge, rockpooling and the disco. The food was delicious (particularly the of pancakes where we got to play the pancake frisbee game), the staff were nice and the beds were comfy. But I think everyone most enjoyed surfing and the disco most of all!

Thank you to all our wonderful teachers and the HT and St. Mary’s staff for their organisations and for helping to make camp such a memorable experience.

Here are a few pictures from our camp experience.

5/6 Campers have departed Waratah Bay

Hi everyone,

After three awesome days at Waratah Bay including getting one final session down at the beach the 5/6 students have departed camp and are on their way back to Holy Trinity. The buses will stop off at Leongatha for lunch and for everyone to stretch their legs before the final journey back to Wantirna South.

At this stage the buses should arrive back at school between 2.30 and 3pm but if this timing changes we will notify you via Operoo.

Thanks for your support of the 5/6 camp!

Day 2 of 5/6 Camp at Waratah Bay

Day 2 of 5/6 Camp at Waratah Bay

After an ‘action packed’ first day at Waratah Bay the 5/6s enjoyed a night walk together on the beach where they learnt about some of the star constellations that are difficult to see in Melbourne and shared some good stories around the campfire whilst toasting some delicious treats.  After such a big day everyone had a ‘restful’ sleep (except the teachers who forgot to bring their teddy bears).

This morning we enjoyed ‘the Great Waratah breakfast’ then everyone participated in some more ‘rotational’ activities including surfing, ropes course and rock wall climbing. After lunch everyone took a walk along the beach to Chicken Rock where the students explored the rock pools and discovered some of the beautiful creatures that live in this part of Victoria. They were encouraged to use all their senses during the rock pool ramble and many students noted the interesting ‘smells’ that were discovered in this area.

This evening everyone is looking forward to the disco and tomorrow morning we are really excited to participate in the beach games.

We will try to update everyone once we board the bus and return to school but at this stage we are planning to depart at approximately 12.30pm (the journey takes about 2 and a half hours).

Here are a few photos from our recent activities …… (more will be posted once we upload the photos from the iPads).

The 5/6 Happy Campers have arrived!

The 5/6 Happy Campers have arrived!

This morning (Monday 22nd February) our 5/6 campers departed Holy Trinity at about 8.45am destined for Waratah Bay for their beach camp adventure. After a short stop off at Leongatha for recess the happy campers arrived at the Waratah Beach Camp at just before 12pm.

The students have familiarised themselves with the beautiful surrounds of the camp, settled into the dorms and will this afternoon participate in group activities including giant swing, nitro crossing and surfing.

By this evening the students will all be ready for a delicious dinner.

Keep posted for future updates including some photos over the next couple of days.

New School Captains for 2021

New School Captains for 2021

Today the 2021 school captains were announced and were presented their badges by our current school captains.

This term the year five students have been preparing themselves for their upcoming leadership roles and part this preparation involved having a leadership day where they learnt about some of the different types of leaders we find in our world, the leadership qualities we admire as well as the different leadership roles available when the students are in year six. Each student was required to write a letter to Mr. Downie informing him of the leadership qualities they display as well as the leadership roles they would like to undertake in 2021. Some students applied for the role of school captain and it was pleasing to see how well the students did in their applications. Well done to our new school captains who have big shoes to fill when Jess, Josh, Sienna and Aiden move onto year seven.

Here is the video of today’s announcement.
