Government in 5/6

Government in 5/6

In our 5/6 level we have been learning about the different types and levels of Government for our Inquiry unit. Some of the different topics we have learnt about include the different levels of Government (Local, State and Federal) and the different houses of Federal Government which are The House Of Representatives (Green House) and the Senate (Red House). We also learnt about how laws are made and that there is an incredible 4500 rooms in Parliament House.

To demonstrate our learning of this topic the 5/6 students created a presentation showcasing what we had learnt. Some students completed a poster and other completed a slide show.

Here is some of the work from 5/6 Red.

Enjoy!

Buddy Breakfast 2023

Buddy Breakfast 2023

Last Thursday (March 30th), our Year 6’s and Preps came to school early along with their families for Buddy Breakfast.  This event is a special opportunity for everyone to get to know each other and enjoy some yummy food together. One of the most special parts of our Buddy Breakfast is when the year 6 students present their Prep buddy with a special ‘Buddy Bear’. The purple buddy bear is an initiative from the Alannah & Madeline Foundation that helps to let every student know how special they are in our HT / St. Mary’s community. Many year 6 students still have their purple ‘Buddy Bear’ which is a symbol of how special the prep / year 6 buddy relationship is.

Overall, everyone really enjoyed our buddy breakfast and are thankful for the opportunity to gather together.

Here are some of the photos from the day ……

5/6 Camp

5/6 Camp

One of the most exciting parts of being in the 5/6 Level is going on camp. This year the 5/6’s didn’t have to wait too long as we were able to attend camp in the first few weeks of this term.

Our bus trip to camp took about 3 hours and when our buses arrived we were welcomed by staff at Camp Coonawarra. After unpacking the Coonawarra staff explained about where the different areas of the camp were and when the different eating times took place. After lunch we were excited to begin our super fun activities. Some of the different rotational activities were raft building, canoeing, giant swing, flying fox, the labyrinth, rock climbing, high ropes as well as damper making and pool activities.

Another exciting part of camp is when we were able to spend some time in our cabins. Most students ran to claim a top bunk and then we spent some time with our other cabin roommates.

Another highlight of camp was the night time activities. On one night we went for a night walk and another night we watched a movie!

After three days and two nights of some of the best experiences of our life we travelled back to school with many fun stories to share with our families.

Overall, our 5/6 Camp to Coonawarra was amazing and we are thankful to all the staff and families for providing us with this wonderful opportunity to go on camp.

School Production – The Land of Dance

School Production – The Land of Dance

There is lots of excitement around HT & St. Mary’s at the moment (particularly around the Italian room) as 2023 is going to be a School Production year. The theme for this year’s production is The Land Of Dance and our school concert will take place towards the end of term 3. Each class is learning their choreography songs and theme and over the coming months they will learn about the dances and costumes they will be using.

The auditions of the different parts of our production have been taking place over the past couple of weeks. The 5/6 students were given the opportunity to audition for these parts.  Seniora Formichelli is filming each auditioning character and then these videos will be shown to the Italian Production Committee to decide on who will be the different characters. Some of the different characters in the production include nonna, nonno, the mayor and the bus driver.

Seniora Formichelli has been working on putting the whole production together since last year and we are very lucky to have her helping to create so much excitement for the concert.

There will be lots of different posts on the school blog over the coming months as the production gets closer.

Here are a few photos from the recent auditions …..

5/6 Camp Day 2

Despite the warm day everyone has had a lot of fun on camp particularly completing all the different camp activities. The students have also enjoyed a couple of extra treats to assist with keeping cool.

Unfortunately, due to wifi issues no other photos have been able to be shared on this post but the staff wanted to let everyone know that all the students are having a great time.

Please continue to return back to the blog for any further updates we receive.

Enjoy a quieter house for one final night before our 5/6 campers return back tomorrow.

Congratulations Year 6

Congratulations Year 6

On Friday, the Year 6 students were presented with their jackets and school leader pins at assembly. They were extremely excited to finally receive them and immediately put them on with beaming smiles of pride. We hope that they become a symbol of their leadership and learning journey in their final year of Primary School.
Congratulations to those Year 6 students who were elected as our school Leaders for 2023. We know that you will represent Holy Trinity spiritedly, and exemplify what it means to be a part of the Holy Trinity school community.

Digitech Financial Unit

Digitech Financial Unit

Over the past month the year 5 and 6 students have been developing their skills with using a spreadsheet as part of our financial unit in Digitech. One part of this unit involved us students having to apply for a job by completing a letter of application and personal resume. All students who completed their job application got a job although there were a few students that had to go on a job seeker allowance because they did not finish their application. Once jobs were assigned the students had to calculate how much they would get paid then take away deductions such as tax, superannuation as well as other expenses such as insurance, food and transport. We kept a record of all of this using our spreadsheets which was much easier when we learnt to use the different formulas.

Here is a picture of my spreadsheet calculating the earnings of a computer programmer.

Year 5 Lego

Year 5 Lego

This term the year 5’s have been doing Lego sessions with Mr Mullavey. The year 5’s had loads of fun building a variety of Lego models including an electric mixer, a helicopter and a chronoscope. We even built a wind power plant that we coded using the Wedo program on our Chromebooks. Lots of groups even got the power plant to work automatically!

Here are some pictures from our Lego sessions this term……

Year 5 Leadership Day

Year 5 Leadership Day

Recently, the year 5’s had a special day together where we learnt about leadership. This is in preparation for the year 5 students soon becoming the new year 6 leaders in 2023 and the additional responsibilities that come with this. We were lucky to have Miss Humphris and Mr Scutt come to speak to us about  leadership and some good examples of who leaders are. We learned how leaders can be good at reading others and Mr Scutt showed how good a leader he is by outsmarting everyone.

The school also provided food for us during the day which was amazing! We got muffins, pizza, juice and icy poles. We also played games related to leadership.

Overall, it was the best day ever.

Here are some of the photos from our recent leadership day…..

Christmas Cooking

Christmas Cooking

On Wednesday the 7th of December the Year 5 were lucky to have the opportunity to do some Christmas cooking. Ms Lauritsen taught us how to make some coconut ice (Christmas style) and some of the ingredients included rice bubbles, condensed milk, sugar, coconut and food colouring. The year 5 students had a lot of fun with the cooking activities and we all got one slice of coconut ice to give to our family as well as a card that we wrote for them.

This is what our Christmas cooking looked like after it was wrapped …..

Year 5/6 Softball

Year 5/6 Softball

On Monday 17th October, two teams of students from year 5/6 represented HT at softball in the Knox Division Championships at Gilbert Park. As you can imagine the competition was very strong when competing against all the other district winners but we held our own winning two of the three games that we played. Unfortunately, we just missed out on making it to the regional championships where just missed out on percentage and finishing third overall.

Overall, we all had lots of fun and represented HT with great pride and displayed great sportsmanship throughout the day. Thanks to Mr. D for helping to train us throughout the last couple of months and for helping us to participate in the day.

Year 6 Metro Incursion

Year 6 Metro Incursion

During week 3, the year 6’s were fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in a Metro transport incursion. Matt, a community education officer from Metro transport, talked to us about the different ways we can travel on PTV, (Public Transport Victoria) so that we have experience for next year when we go to high school. The year 6’s learnt how to use a MyKi, the rules of public transport and the safety precautions we should take to ensure we have the best experience each time we travel.  At the end of our excursion we took a test to see how much we had learnt and got the best score out of any school that Matt had worked with (a whopping score of 1,201).

Overall, we learnt a lot from our excursion and we all feel confident that we will have no trouble taking public transport once we begin attending secondary school.

Thank you to Matt for providing this opportunity for the year 6 students to learn about different ways we can travel around our city.

Life Saving Beach Day

Life Saving Beach Day

Last Friday (14 October), the year 5/6 students went on an excursion to Hampton Beach to learn about beach safety. We learnt what to do in a emergency (DRSABCD), how you should act at the beach and the rules you should follow at the beach. We also learnt some great beach games such as Giants Treasure and Capture the flag.

Overall, all the 5/6 students were thankful for the opportunity to participate in this day and it was a very fun and helpful for us.

Year 6 Lego Program

Year 6 Lego Program

Late in term 3 and early in term 4, the grade 6 students have been continuing to develop their STEM skills through participating in the Lego Engineers program. We have built made caterpillars, battle tanks, self flipping cars and a wind power plant. In addition, we have developed our coding skills by using the Wedo program on our Chromebooks to program the models to undertake different processes such as to spin faster, make a relevant sound and change colour.

Overall, our Year 6 students have thoroughly enjoyed participating in the Lego program and have learnt a lot of scientific skills and engineering knowledge that will hopefully help us with our learning as we move into secondary school.

Here are some photos of our recent Lego sessions ….

Socktober : FAQs

What is World Mission Month?

October marks World Mission Month which celebrities the global work of the Church who support those in need around the world. As a Catholic school we are responding the call of Pope Francis, to be a witness of love in the world.

Pope Francis, in his 2022 World Mission Sunday message, invites everyone to answer the call to be missionary, sharing that “Mission is carried out together, not individually…”.

Mission in action is never confined to a single person or to the present moment, but extends through communities, across generations, and eternally.

Catholic Mission – Reach Out! Give Life!

The Year 5 students have spent time in class learning about mission.

The Catholic Mission agency contributes funding and provides project support to critical church-run initiatives in Africa, Asia, Oceania and South America, as well as remote dioceses within Australia.

Year 5 Fundraising effort

After learning all about mission the students have planned and organised a fundraiser to acknowledge and support the work of Catholic Mission.  The fundraiser encourages the students and our school community to think not only of what they will do to help, but why they will do it.

Our Year 5 students have demonstrated teamwork, fairness, compassion and effort when planning and preparing the fundraiser. There will be three activities which students can participate in. The activities are a “silly sock” design competition, a soccer goal shootout competition and of course wearing “Silly Socks“! All activities are happening on Friday 4th November.

Inter School Sports – Tennis

Inter School Sports – Tennis

On Wednesday 24th of August and Tuesday 6th of September, the students from Years 5 and 6 students represented HT and St. Mary’s at tennis at Mountain Gate.

The students chosen to play tennis were divided up into 2 boys teams, Team A and Team B, as well as one girls team. Team A consisted of mainly Year 6 boys whilst Team B consisted of mainly Year 5 boys. The girls team consisted of both students from Years 5 and 6.

Some of the schools that we played against included Boronia K-12, Kent Park, Wattleview, St Judes and Scoresby. When Team A was playing games on court Team B would be cheering, counting the team’s points or practising and getting ready for their upcoming game. Then Team A and Team B would swap and it was great to receive encouragement throughout the day. Everyone was very enthusiastic even when the other schools were winning.

Overall, it was a very successful and well organised day with all teams winning some games. Well done to all students for their great behaviour and for representing our school with such great sportsmanship.

Here are a few photos of us in action at our games ……

Interschool Sports – Cricket

Interschool Sports – Cricket

On Wednesday August 24th and Tuesday 6th September the years 5’s and 6’s represented Holy Trinity and St. Mary’s at Interschool Cricket. The other schools that we played against included Wattleview, Scoresby, St Judes, Kent Park and Bayswater West and all games were played at HV Jones Reserve at Mountain Gate. We were divided into two team with team A being an all boys team and team B being a mixed team.

We were the first school to arrive at the ground so we had some time to practise our bowling and batting skills. Once all the schools arrived we ate some food and went to our assigned cricket pitches to play our games. Each school had an A and B team and for the first day the A teams played against the B teams.

On day 1 our A team was ‘on fire’ and won all their games while our B team played well but missed out on achieving any victories. However, on day 2 all the B teams played against one another and the A teams played the other A teams from the other schools. The B team showed how much they had improved throughout the competition by winning half of their games and once again our A team won all of their games meaning they were they were the champions of the entire tournament. As Division champion our A team will play against the winners of other Divisions at the cricket District Championship next term.

Overall, it was a highly successful two days for our cricket teams and they represented our school using the same TORCH values that they use at school.

Interschool Sports – Softball

On Wednesday the 24th of August and  Tuesday the 6th of September the year 5/6 students represented Holy Trinity & St. Mary’s in Interschool Sports for Softball. The competition took place at Gilbert Park where we competed against teams from Knox Park, Bayswater West, Kent Park and Wattleview. Our school had two teams compete with one team being an all girls team and another a mixed team.

Both HT teams were very successful during the competition with both teams winning all of their matches on the first day except for the game between both Holy Trinity teams where the HT mixed team won.

On the second day of competition we were equally successful with Holy Trinity defeating Knox Park in the grand final by 8 runs. Both teams  were premiers of the Scoresby district and will play against the other district winning teams in the Division Interschool Softball competition in term 4.

Overall, everyone really enjoyed the representing HT & St. Mary’s in softball and consistently demonstrated the TORCH values throughout the competition. Well done to everyone and thank you to Miss Tubby and Mr. D for helping to coach and prepare us for the competition.
