Lego Sessions are up and running

Our Lego Engineering program is up and running for 2022 with lessons taking place for the students in Years 3 to 6.

The program helps to develop the students’ skills and knowledge in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) whilst building a variety of models such as a carousel, helicopter, industrial mixer and a chronoscope. During these lessons we learn about some of the different forces that help these machines work and students work with a partner to follow a series of instructions in order to build the model. We also look for ways to innovate our designs to help them to go faster, work safer or move with greater accuracy.

These sessions will continue throughout this year with the students in years 5 and 6 participating in the program this term and the students in years 3 and 4 completing a series of lessons next term. This program will continue throughout the remainder of the year hopefully without any of the COVID interruptions we have had in the past two year.

District Swimming

On Tuesday 22nd February, selected students from Year 3 to Year 6 were chosen to represent Holy Trinity & St. Mary’s at the Scoresby District Swimming carnival at Kilsyth Centenary Swimming Pool. This was after students had been participated in some swimming trials at Knox Leisureworks swimming pool over the past two Tuesday mornings.

Our school also had some big achievements including Wyatt who got first in 1st in freestyle, 1st in the 4 by 50m freestyle relay and 2nd in backstroke. He swam so well that he also was awarded age group champion for 9/10 boys which is a massive achievement. Some of the other year 4 winners were Liam who won his freestyle race, June and Grace who both came 2nd in breaststroke. June, Charlotte, Grace and Liam also helped to win the freestyle relay for the year 4 students. Hamish W also did a great job with coming first in his backstroke race for the Year 3’s.

The Year 5 students also had some really strong performances with some of our winners being Darcy who came 3rd in freestyle, Tyler G who won his backstroke and came 3rd in breastroke and Cara G who came 2nd in breaststroke. Chantal, Zac, Maddie, Eden and Siana also has strong results in their chosen events. In Year 6’s Zeke swam a great race to come 1st in butterfly and Belle was impressive with coming 3rd in backstroke. Mia got 3rd in freestyle, Ella D and Lucas got 1st in their breastroke races and Matt got 3rd in backstroke. Jordan and James also swam well to round off a great day for our swim team.

We had other students who may not have earned a ribbon in their race but still contributed to our school’s overall result with earning points in their race.

Overall, as a result of our fantastic efforts Holy Trinity & St. Mary’s were able to achieve 2nd place which is an amazing effort. Congrats to everyone for their participation and hard work!

Overall, it was all heaps of fun and everyone did a great job at consistently displaying the TORCH values whilst representing our school.

The Leaders of 2022

This year I am one of the lucky students to be selected to be a school captain for 2022. I am so excited to be a school captain but I also understand what an important role it is.

To be chosen as a school captain each person was required to complete a number of steps. Firstly, we had to to write a letter to Mr Downie (last year’s principal) outlining why we would make a good school captain and then we made a speech to the students in our year level about our qualities. As there were a number of great candidates for this role it was narrowed down to a top 8 then we had to demonstrate our leadership skills by taking Mr Downie on a school tour as if he was a new parent making a decision about whether HT would be a good fit for his child/ren. Ella, Zeke, Nathan and myself were the lucky students chosen as the school captains and our responsibilities began even before the beginning of the new school year when we had some new photos taken with our new school principal, Mr. Scutt.

So far the responsibilities we have undertaken as school captains have included leading Monday morning assembly, meeting with Mr. Scutt and Mr. Harvie on a number of occasions and this Friday will help lead our first online assembly with Mr. Scutt and I am very excited about this (and a bit nervous as well). Soon we will be leading the school tours for new families that would like to enroll their child to our community.

I can’t wait for all the leadership opportunities that all the year sixes will have in their leadership roles for 2022.

Digitech leaders

On Monday, the year 6 Digitech leaders met for the first time to discuss our leadership responsibilities with this role as well as to outline some possible ideas that we will try to undertake as Digitech leaders this year.

Some of these ideas included introducing a new Minecraft Club for beginners, having an advanced Minecraft club later in the year and possibly introducing a coding club. The Digitech leaders will begin to meet each week to prepare some lessons so that later on this term we will be ready to begin a new Minecraft Club. More information about the Minecraft Club and any other Digitech clubs will be shared in the coming weeks once we have confirmed details such as the most suitable days to have our clubs and what age levels will be most suited to the lessons.

In addition, the Digitech leaders will be visiting each class on a weekly basis to help support teachers with any technical issues they may be experiencing in their classroom.

Year 6 Smart Generation Webinar- T-shirt Design

On Tuesday the 9th of November, the Year 6s held a Webinar about why we shouldn’t drink alcohol at a young age and why we should drink responsibly when at highschool parties or hangouts etc. In Art, we had to design a shirt to wear at the webinar. We voted on which design would be made into a shirt, there were many amazing designs. My design was chosen and it was made into the shirt that we wore in the webinar. A HUGE thank you to Mrs Laming for helping us with the design.

We had to incorporate a slogan into our design, the slogan was “First you take a drink, and then the drink takes you.” so I put a big cross around a silhouetto of a bottle of alcohol, and inside the red X I wrote the slogan. I had a great time learning throughout this program.

Smart Generation

Smart Generation- Year 6 Webinar.

Back in Term 1, the Year 6 level participated in a unit called Smart Generation organised by the EACH program. We learnt about the impact alcohol can have on young bodies. Over this unit we also learnt about the brain sustainability and when our brain fully grows. This topic was supposed to last only 1 term but ended up lasting all four terms due to the Covid-19 lockdown.

We participated in role positions to act in a scenario of what could happen when there is peer pressure. We also made a slogan which was “First you take a drink and then the drink takes you” and we designed a logo which was voted on by our Year 6 level. Our Year 6 level created a Webinar to show our parents what we have learnt about Smart Generation and to show them our reflection videos from online learning. We spent a couple of days practicing our readings and presentation and when the day came it was a huge success!

We learnt a lot of things that could help us in the future and now we know what the responsible thing to do in situations that involve alcohol. A HUGE thank you to Mrs Smith, Mr D, Miss Tubby, Mrs Laming, and Mrs Johnson for all their efforts in teaching us this unit. Also, thank you to Mrs Whelan and Deborah from EACH for allowing us this amazing opportunity.

ALL TOGETHER AGAIN

Welcome back everyone!

We are so excited to have everyone back at school, all together again. All the staff were so happy to see all your smiling faces this morning. The bubbles were a big hit and it was great to see everyone using their bubble wands on the playground and oval.

Cyber Safety ‘Mind maps’

During the past few Digitech sessions the students in Years 1 to 6 have been learning to use an online mind mapping program called Mindmup. Mind mapping is a visual way of setting out our learning where we put together similar ideas into groups much like we group our ideas into paragraphs or onto the same slide. Students enjoy the ability to use images to represent a phrase as well as to colour code the different topics that they use. Our Digitech mind maps demonstrated our cyber safety understanding that we have developed during remote learning.

I would like to say a massive THANK YOU to our wonderful parents who supported their children in learning to use this new program. I’m sure they learnt some new skills as well during our unit. This program will certainly be regularly used in classrooms in the years to come.

SRC – New School Uniform

This term our SRC (Student Representative Council) have been regularly meeting to work through what our new school uniform might look like in 2022 and beyond.

Over the past couple of weeks we shared some of our wonderful ideas including labelling our designs.

Some of ideas included introducing a tie, having a hoodie and creating a uniform that can be worn by both girls and boys and having just one uniform that is a bit more ‘sporty’ and can be worn on both PE and non PE days.

Winter School Sports (T-Ball)

Late last term students from Years 5 and 6 represented HT at T-ball. We won all 3 of our games with two of our games being close against Knox Park and Wattleview. In the final game we played Kent Park and won a bit more comfortably. It was great how after each game we shook hands with the other team and said GG (which means good game).

As a result of winning all three game we have qualified to play in the Division competition against the other winners of the District Competitions. This will take place on Thursday of this week.

Overall, we had a great time and are thankful to the other teachers and parents who helped with training and with running the day.

Winter School Sports (Netball)

Late last term, a group of year 5 and 6 girls were chosen to represent HT in the Interschool Sports Netball Championships. decided to compete in the Netball. In the first game our team played Boronia K-12 and we won 3 to 1. In the second game we played against Wattleview and we won 15 to 5. In our third and final game we played Knox Park and won again 14 to 3 meaning that we ended up winning all 3 games!

Overall, everyone enjoyed playing and was happy with how well we had played. We all learnt lots about how to play netball which was an amazing experience! Also a big thanks to Mrs Rocha, Carly (Lyla’s mum) and Mrs Jekle for taking us there and to Mr D for training us!

Winter schools sports (AFL Mixed)

Late last term a group of 5/6 students represented HT at the Interschool Sports for AFL. These games took place at the Fairpark ground on Lewis Road and overall we won two games and lost one. Sadly, we didn’t make it through to the Division playoffs but we still had lots of fun and did a great job with representing HT with so much pride. A big thanks must go to our wonderful parents who assisted with the day as well as Mr. B and Mr. D for helping to organise the day.

Winter School Sports (Soccer)

At the end of last term (Wednesday 26th June) a 5/6 boys and girls team represented Holy Trinity Interschool Sports for soccer. Both teams played extremely well with the boys making it through to the Division playoffs after winning all of our games. In the first game the HT boys played against Knox Park and after a tight early contest we won reasonably comfortably keeping them at 0. In our second game we played St. Judes and despite being 0 to 3 down at one stage we were able to achieve a remarkable comeback and win 4-3. In our final game the HT boys played against Scoresby and again we were able to win by a comfortable margin ensuring that we made it through to the Division championships.

The HT girls also played very well winning their first game against Knox Park and second game against St. Jude’s and in a close game they went down to Scoresby in their final game. This was a great achievement considering how many of our girls played their first competitive games on this day.

Overall, both HT soccer teams did themselves and our school proud with their performance and the way they represented our school on this day. Well done HT!!!!

Chemistry Science in Year 6

This term the year 6’s have been learning about chemistry science. In one of the most recent experiments we tested out how a tablet dissolved in different water of different temperatures. In this experiment we placed a tablet into glasses that had cold, room temperature and hot water.

We discovered that the fastest time for the tablet to fully dissolve was when it was placed in the hot water.

House Cross Country

On Friday 7 May the kids from years 3 to 6 participated in a house cross country at Egan Lee Reserve. Everyone did really well considering that it was a warm day. In PE lessons everyone had been preparing for weeks and many students were was really nervous.

The year 3’s and 4’s had to run 2km which was 2 laps around the track and the year 5’s and 6’s had to run 3km which was 3 laps around the track.

Some of the results were:

From year 3 Luke W got 1st for the boys and June got 1st for the girls.

From year 4 Darcy won it for the boys and Eden won it for the girls.

From year 5 Nathan won it for the boys and Ella D won it for the girls.

From year 6 Luke A won it for the boys and Sunny won it for the girls.

Sixty students will represent our school at the district country on 28th May.

Thank you to Mr D for organising the day very well and to all our wonderful parent helpers that assisted with running the event.

Taster Day at Mater Christi

Yesterday (18.5.21) all the year 4 and 5 girls went to Mater Christi in Belgrave for a taster day. A taster day is when students from primary school visit a secondary school to have some kind of experience of what it is like to go to high school. Some of the activities we had a chance to try were: Science, Monopoly and Sport. Monopoly was a bit different from the board game because we got to explore the different parts of the school and answer questions about these places.

What we did:

– First we entered Mater Christi
– Next we played Monopoly and explored the school
– After that we had recess
– Then we had P.E. We played Popcorn and Golden child
– After we had Science ( it was my favourite )
Next we got show bags that had; crayons and pencils.

We are very thankful to Mater Christi for the chance to experience what it is like to go to secondary school.

Taster Day at St. Josephs

Yesterday (18/5/21) the students in years four and five had a Taster Day at secondary school. A Taster Day is an opportunity when primary students can experience what it is like at high school, as they are choosing which high school to go to. The boys were lucky enough to go to St. Joseph’s in Ferntree Gully and had heaps of fun completing activities.

There were 4 different activities were drama, science, music and sport. My group got to do drama first and I was very excited when I won the first two rounds of the first game. Afterwards, my group did science and wow …… that explosion was huge!!!! We were amazed by what science could do.

We also go to experience what a recess is like by having snack and brain food.

We are all very thankful to St. Joseph’s for the chance to be part of the secondary school taster day.

Year 3 and 5 Naplan

Last week the students in year 3 and 5 participated in Naplan beginning on the 11th of May and ending on 13th of May. Naplan stands for National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy is a combination of four tests ranging from language conventions to mathematics. Tuesday is the day when everyone did two tests (writing and language conventions which is testing our understanding of spelling, punctuation and grammar). On Wednesday the students participated in a reading test and on Thursday we did a numeracy test. The aim of Naplan is to help students to understand where they are up to with their learning and and where they need help. Sometimes students can get a bit ‘stressed out’ about Naplan but my advice to all people who are doing Naplan now or in the future is to not to get worried by the whole Naplan business. You can just remind yourself that Naplan is just like any other normal test we do in class. I also highly recommend that you don’t talk to your classmates during the tests as this may look like you are talking about the test questions.

After Naplan was completed we all felt much better and look forward to doing lots of other fun learning in class.

Extraordinary Year 5 Artists

The Year 5Y artists created amazing Owl Artworks using Charcoal. I’m so proud of them for not judging their work and committing to finish each effort. Sometimes we surprise ourselves and I think they were surprised by their extraordinary owl artworks.
