Year 5 Maths

Year 5 Maths

In Year 5 we have been learning about how we find the area of rectangles and squares. We even learnt how to find the area of an irregular shape! Mr.B came in to challenge and get us thinking a bit more. We discovered that there are different ways to find the area of a shape with some involving adding and subtracting and others involving multiplication (and sometimes division).

In the below activity we found out the area of our names (as well as demonstrating our artistic skills).

How do you think we went?

Year 6’s Get their Leadership Roles

Year 6’s Get their Leadership Roles

After many months waiting the year 6 leadership roles were finally given out at Assembly last Friday. There are eight different roles, which are Liturgy Leaders, Art Leaders,  Learning Leaders, Environment Leaders, Health Leaders, Friendship Leaders, Digitech Leaders, and last but not least, the School Leaders. Being a year 6 leader is a great way of learning about how to be responsible and sharing our expertise around the school. We are all really looking forward to making 2019 a great year for everyone at HT.

Congratulations to all Year 6’s and hope that they have a good year ahead of them.

Here are the leaders of 2019 …..

Special Art Groups and Art Clubs

Special Art Groups and Art Clubs

At Holy Trinity we are very lucky to have the opportunity to participate in “Special Art Groups.” In special art groups a few students are chosen by Mrs Laming and the art leaders to complete a special art piece to represent our school. One special project we completed last year was when we painted skateboards with the TORCH values on them. These skateboards are displayed in the walkway into our Great Space. As you can see below the skateboards are very impressive.

Later on this year we will also have some special art clubs where students have the opportunity to sign up to participate in this group during lunchtimes. The art club is often led by our Year 6 Art leaders and they teach a range of skills including painting, knitting and weaving.

Here are some of our special art pieces.

Friendship Groups

Friendship Groups

On Friday the 8th of February, the whole school had our very first Friendship Group for 2019. The first friendship group was so fun for everyone, especially for the preps. There are 16 groups in total and the students were with a  teacher that may not be their class teacher and different kids from Prep – Year 6. Friendship Groups is a way to reach out to new friends and learn what the T.O.R.C.H values are. They also find out what our school motto really means at Holy Trinity. Now that this is my 7th year at HT I can tell that since prep I have learnt so much about the T.O.R.C.H values and now I display them every day.

Here are some photos from our Friendship Groups today….

Let the school year begin!

Let the school year begin!

Today (Friday 8 February) marks the end of our first full week back at HT and St. Mary’s for 2019. Our assessment days last week were very successful and helped to give the teachers some good knowledge about where they can help support the students with their learning this year. One big change in 2019 is that all classes now straight grades which will be particularly different for the older levels of our school.

We have also had a lot of classroom changes including the year 4 classes moving over to where the art room and after school care used to be and the year 3 students moving in to the Amazing Space.

In addition, there has been some new ‘sound proofing’ curtains have been added to this space which are really helping with the students learning there.

Parent / Teacher meetings ran smoothly this week and today we all went over to St. Judes to celebrate mass as a parish community. We were lucky to also have recess where we got to play on St. Jude’s playground with all 3 schools together (St. Mary’s, St. Jude’s & Holy Trinity).

It’s hard to believe that we have only been back for a week.

Overall, it has been an ‘action packed’ beginning to the school year and it is great to see so many happy faces as we settle into 2019.

So proud of the Grade Three and Four students who have been learning to sew over the last few weeks. They learnt how to do running stitch and back stitch and approached learning these new skills with enthusiasm. These were some of the quietest lessons in the art room as they used all their energy to concentrate on their sewing.

And more news from the Art Room

This week we began work on our mural in the breezeway near the Great Space. Earlier in the year the Grade Five and Six artists designed a graffiti character. Each student designed and drew their character onto brick wall type paper.

Three of theses designs have been chosen to feature on our ‘Love is all around us’ mural.

Congratulations to the three artists – Chloe McLean, Aleisha Elliot and Caitlin Paull. The wall is going to look amazing. The girls began work on their characters on Friday. Here’s a sneak peek.

Exciting Projects in the Art Room

A group of wonderful Grade Five and Six artists have been busy crocheting, knitting and creating pom poms to ‘yarn bomb’ the vintage bike. Its only just the beginning but it looks awesome. If you get a chance have a look at it, its in the great space next to the library.

Poetry in 3/4

Poetry in 3/4

This past couple of weeks in 3/4 , we have been exploring poetry. We have been learning about different types of poems and have been practicing creating our own. Here are some poems that some of the students from 3/4R have written.

(: Year 6 Safety Swimming Day :)

(: Year 6 Safety Swimming Day :)

Today the year 6’s participated in a ‘Safety around Water’ program at Knox Leisureworks to boost their knowledge and confidence about water safety. During this program we accomplished a series of activities including throw and pull in rescue, throw rescue, 25 metre freestyle and 25 meter any stroke. We also had to tread water for 2.30 minutes and then float for another 5 minutes. The best part of the day was at the end of the session when everyone went on the water slide. Today everyone show confidence, respect and we all tried to do the best we could.

Great job grade 6’s!

Swimming at HT

Swimming at HT

Over the last two weeks (November 7 to November 16) the Preps to Year 4s have been participating in swimming lessons at Knox Leisureworks. The students have been travelling to the pool each day by bus and the lessons last for 45 minutes. They are learning to do lots of cool ways of swimming,  The students come to school each day with their bathers underneath their school uniform so they can be all ready to swim when they get to pool. The last couple of days the students have had to wear their pyjamas in the pool which is pretty cool. Here are some of the students in action …..
