Build a bridge and get over it!

Build a bridge and get over it!

For our inquiry in grade 3/4 this term, we learnt all about bridge design and technology. We learnt about the purpose of bridges as well the types of bridges such as suspension, beam, arch and cantilever. Bridges make driving, walking or any type of transport easier.

The year 3 and 4 teachers gave the students a mission to ‘build a bridge and get over it!’

We used various materials to build our bridges which we shared at assembly last week.

Here are some photos of how we made our bridges.

GARDEN CLUB NEWS

GARDEN CLUB NEWS

Even though the  garden was very quiet over Winter we still managed to harvest a bumper crop of snow peas and about 4 good sized beetroot! However, the turnips weren’t quite as we’d expected! Let’s just say they got a little ‘too friendly’! This apparently happens when the soil is too compacted for them to grow freely.  The children really enjoyed picking and eating the snow peas straight from the vines! Yum! We also grew a great crop of spring onions that I didn’t take photos of.

Enchanted Maze Garden

Enchanted Maze Garden

On Thursday 3rd of November we went on an excursion to the Enchanted Adventures. This was part of our learning in literacy & inquiry about bridges.

We got to go on the tube slide and it was really fun because there was a big drop. We also went on a rope playground called a Sky Scramble. It was exciting because you were above the ground. We went in small groups through the mazes. We had to find our way out of the mazes, which had some different types of bridges.

We also got to cross some bridges like the canopy walk, which was a suspension bridge.

We had the best time because the weather was good and we got to experience new things.

THE BOOK FAIR IS HERE!

THE BOOK FAIR IS HERE!

The children were soooo excited to come to the Book Fair! Look out for your child/ren’s wish list in their school bag. On their wish list you will see the item name, the price and the location (BC1 or table). BC or bookcase indicates which number bookcase the item/s are from. Below you will see photos of all the bookcases (numbered at the top) so that you can see what your child/ren would like to buy. There is no obligation to buy, however every purchase earns the school a commission, which allows us to purchase more resources for the library. Please use this link to make a purchase  https://parentpayments.scholastic.com.au/BookFairs; write the receipt number on the back of the wish list. This year we are also accepting cash payments. Give the wish list to your child to bring back to school and I can then send the items home. If there are any items that parents would like to purchase as gifts, or for any queries please email me at whoneysett@htws.catholic.edu.au (or call the school after 2pm each day) and I can make arrangements for you to pick them up. Some of the more popular items may sell out quickly, so they will be placed on backorder and sent home ASAP!  Thank you for your support!

Year 3 Enchanted Adventure

On Thursday, Year 3 set off to Enchanted Adventure as part of our unit on bridges.
We had so much fun exploring the canopy walk that had wobbly wooden and mesh bridges.
We also saw concrete and pebble bridges in the amazing mazes.
Though most of all we loved the tube sliding, where we also explored force by sliding very fast down plastic tubing which was like a bridge.
We had a fantastic day exploring different types of bridges and how they can be used in something so fun!!!

Year 5/6 Softball

Year 5/6 Softball

On Monday 17th October, two teams of students from year 5/6 represented HT at softball in the Knox Division Championships at Gilbert Park. As you can imagine the competition was very strong when competing against all the other district winners but we held our own winning two of the three games that we played. Unfortunately, we just missed out on making it to the regional championships where just missed out on percentage and finishing third overall.

Overall, we all had lots of fun and represented HT with great pride and displayed great sportsmanship throughout the day. Thanks to Mr. D for helping to train us throughout the last couple of months and for helping us to participate in the day.

3/4 Regional Hoop Time Championships

3/4 Regional Hoop Time Championships

On Wednesday the 19th of October, two teams of 3/4 students were chosen to participate in the Regional All Star Hoop Time Championships at the State Basketball Centre. This was after our Future Star team also played in the Future Star Competition  a week prior. Our All Star boys team won all their matches including the grand final against Monbulk Primary. Our All Star girls team also won all their games including a close win in the grand final against Scoresby Primary where they got the job done in the final few minutes.  Our Future Star team also was successful in their grand final which is an amazing result for HT where our All Star Boys, Girls and Future Star teams made it through to the State Hoop Time Championships later on this term.

Well done to our 3/4 students and not only making it through to the State Championships but also using the TORCH values throughout the day as they represented HT. We can’t wait to hear what happens in a few weeks time.

In addition, the Prep students have also been learning about 2D and 3D shapes as a separate topic in Maths.

Overall, the Preps have progressed so much in so many areas of Maths as you can see from their fantastic work below.

Year 6 Metro Incursion

Year 6 Metro Incursion

During week 3, the year 6’s were fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in a Metro transport incursion. Matt, a community education officer from Metro transport, talked to us about the different ways we can travel on PTV, (Public Transport Victoria) so that we have experience for next year when we go to high school. The year 6’s learnt how to use a MyKi, the rules of public transport and the safety precautions we should take to ensure we have the best experience each time we travel.  At the end of our excursion we took a test to see how much we had learnt and got the best score out of any school that Matt had worked with (a whopping score of 1,201).

Overall, we learnt a lot from our excursion and we all feel confident that we will have no trouble taking public transport once we begin attending secondary school.

Thank you to Matt for providing this opportunity for the year 6 students to learn about different ways we can travel around our city.

Prep – 2 Melbourne Zoo Excursion

Prep – 2 Melbourne Zoo Excursion

Two weeks ago on a bright Monday morning (10th of October) our Preps, Grade 1’s and Grade 2’s had a special excursion to the Melbourne Zoo as part of their Science Inquiry topic. The journey was an exciting one for our junior students who were able to travel by bus with their friends for one of the first excursions many of them have ever had. They saw the big cats, elephants, snow leopards, hippos, monkeys, butterflies, all sorts of sea life and of course lots of Australian animals such as kangaroos and koalas. They also had a unique opportunity to get a close up learning experience at the educational centre. Despite all of this for many of the students their favourite part of the day was when they got to eat their food and play with their friends in some of the beautiful green areas of the Melbourne Zoo.

For many students this day could be the highlight of their time at school.

We would like to say a big thank you to our wonderful parent volunteers who assisted throughout the day and to the Prep to 2 teachers for helping to organise the day.

Here are a few pictures of our experiences at the Melbourne Zoo …..

Life Saving Beach Day

Life Saving Beach Day

Last Friday (14 October), the year 5/6 students went on an excursion to Hampton Beach to learn about beach safety. We learnt what to do in a emergency (DRSABCD), how you should act at the beach and the rules you should follow at the beach. We also learnt some great beach games such as Giants Treasure and Capture the flag.

Overall, all the 5/6 students were thankful for the opportunity to participate in this day and it was a very fun and helpful for us.
