5/6 Digital Portfolios

5/6 Digital Portfolios

This semester the 5/6’s have been creating their own Digital Portfolios. This is a good way to show our learning particularly since the 5/6 students do so much of their work on the Chromebooks. We also have been able to show our parents these at our Parent / Teacher interviews. In 5/6R we included our reader’s theatre videos, a writing piece and we even put in genius hour slides. We enjoyed completing our digital portfolios and we are looking forward to putting even more of our learning into our portfolios in semester 2.

Naplan Tests

Naplan Tests

Hi everyone.

Last week the Year 3’s and 5’s completed the Naplan tests for writing, reading and maths. Naplan is a group of tests completed by all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 throughout Australia.

Some students found these tests hard because we needed to answer lots of questions but others really enjoyed doing them. In writing we wrote about our ‘Big Idea’ and we only had 40 minutes to finish it in. In the reading test we had to read some different passages and answer questions about what we read and this time we only had 5o minutes to do the test. In Maths we also did a 50 minutes test about lots of the topics we have been learning about in Maths this year and last.

We are all now happy because we don’t have to worry about Naplan tests until we are in Year 7. We get our results for these tests in August.

4 In A Row [Maths Game]

4 In A Row [Maths Game]

In 5/6B we have been playing games in maths like this one called 4 in a row. The aim of this game is to try and get 4 numbers between 100 and 999 in a row on a numberline. It is a good game because it teaches you how to find numbers on a number line without having every other numbers there. Lots of the students were really competitive when we played it. Here is a few examples of this game in action ……

Essential Assessment (Online Maths)

Essential Assessment (Online Maths)

Essential Assessment is online maths program where you can complete tests and work on your skills at answering  different types of maths questions. It is really good because it is not too hard or too easy, it is perfect for your level once the teacher gets the results of your first test. After you have done some learning you get to sit the test again to see how you have improved with your Maths skills. It also has another feature called My Numeracy which is based on improving on things that you have got wrong in your pretest that you have completed. The 5/6’s use this program regularly in class. Here are a few questions set for me to complete ….

Table Tennis Fun in 5/6

Table Tennis Fun in 5/6

This year the 5/6’s are lucky enough to be able to play table tennis in the Great Space. The students in 5/6 D are having a ball in playing table tennis against each other at lunch time. We also sometimes get to play against the teachers. Maybe one day we can have a  championship against the teachers. I bet the students would win!

Digitech in 5/6

Digitech in 5/6

This term Digitech will look a bit different for our 5/6 students, because they won’t be going to the Tech Lab each week to work on the computers for their lessons like they used to. Instead the students will be lucky enough to participate in the Lego Engineering program where they will get to build lots of different types of machines such as an amusement park carousel, a laundry drier and a conveyor belt. This is part of our new Digital Technologies Curriculum that incorporates STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) within our Digitech lessons. Whilst building different machines our students will be learning about different forces that help to make them function such as centrifugal force, belt transmission and traction. The 3/4 Level will participate in the Lego program next term and then 5/6’s in term 3. All the students are very excited for the program to begin so please keep an eye on our school blog over the coming weeks to see some of our learning in action.

R.E This year

R.E This year

Hi everyone. I am one of the Year 6 Liturgy leaders this year and we have been busy organising lots of school activities such as setting up masses, building new prayer tables for the classrooms and preparing for the John Burland concert. Earlier this year we were lucky enough to go to St. Patrick’s Cathedral (in the city) to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with all the other catholic schools in Melbourne. Here is some of our photos from the day …..

5/6 Solar Buddy Fundraising

5/6 Solar Buddy Fundraising

This term in the 5/6 level we have been fundraising for an organisation called Solar Buddy. You fundraise money and get sent a solar light kit to build. These lights then get sent to the Solar Buddy people and then sent to the people that are living in energy poverty. People in places like Uganda, Ghana, The Gambia, Thailand, Myanmar, Nepal, Tibet, India and more. At this time we have raised over$700. Groups have raised money by holding various stalls and activities such as a fidget spinner raffle, selling slime, guessing how many lollies are in the jar, helping teachers wash cars, selling baked goods and much more.

Unfortunately, because we were working raising money we did not take any photos of us in action.

Stay tuned for a final figure of how much we raised.

Well done 5/6’s on your wonderful efforts throughout our fundraising project!

Ozobot Classes

Ozobot Classes

On Wednesdays during this term the 5/6’s have been learning about Ozobots and how to use them. We created a track to accomplish some tasks where the Ozobots follow some colour commands. We even got to play a game of Bowling with them where the Ozobot knocked over some pins like in the real ten pin bowling game. We also learnt about using a website called Ozoblocky.com where you can code the Ozobots to do different things.

Here are some pictures and videos of our lessons.

Invasion at HT & St. Mary’s – the Ozobots Have Arrived!

Invasion at HT & St. Mary’s – the Ozobots Have Arrived!

The 5/6 students began learning about our new Ozobots which we have purchased thanks to a generous donation from our Parents Association. An Ozobot is a small robot that can be programmed to do different actions such as go faster, turn left or change colour according to the commands (or codes) the user gives them.

Here is a picture of an Ozobot.

Today the students drew coloured lines into codes that they hoped moved the Ozobots in a certain ways.

Here is the 5/6 students hard at work.

Many groups had success with their Ozobots and more importantly learnt lots of new skills that they will use in future lessons.

Here is one successful attempt.

Let’s read about Diversity!

Let’s read about Diversity!

On the 23rd of November, 5/6 W, 1/2MC and 1/2C gathered together in the library to share books that show Diversity. The 5’s and 6’s each got assigned to a couple of the 1/ 2’s each and shared our thoughts on diversity in our library books. The 1’s and 2’s listened to what the 5/ 6’s had to say and they answered questions they asked. The next activity was to find a book on the shelves that showed diversity. The 1/ 2’s task was to show the older students where the diversity was and to prove it using the text or illustrations. The 1/ 2’s did very well answering the questions and proved their thoughts about diversity in picture books quite well. They showed deep thinking and were well behaved. The 5/6s enjoyed sharing their learning and spending their afternoon with the 1/2s.

5/6 Genius Hour

5/6 Genius Hour

The year 5/6’s this term have been investigating innovation in our world. Students have been exploring, researching, and creating work pieces that detail how innovation surrounds our world. Some of the topics include animations in movies, how SMART phones have evolved, how school technology has evolved and how martial arts have changed over time. Next week is D-Day, students will be presenting their findings to the whole level. Stay tuned to see the results next week!

Confirmation Preparation

Confirmation Preparation

Yesterday 5/6M revised their knowledge and understanding of the 7 Gifts and 9 Fruits of the Holy Spirit in preparation to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.  Each student selected a Dove from the internet and printed 2 of them.  They then wrote the Gifts of the Holy Spirit and their definition on one dove and the Fruits of the Holy Spirit and definition on the other dove.  This is how they decided to display them.

Emmaus ‘Hairspray’ Musical

Emmaus ‘Hairspray’ Musical

Today the Year 5 students went to watch the dress rehearsal of Hairspray.  Taylor Paull an ex student of Holy Trinity played lead role of Tracey and Lucas Faundez played one of the Colour Crew.  Their singing and acting skills were exceptional.  It was absolutely amazing to watch them on stage.  Our students were the most well behaved of all the schools present and should be proud of themselves.

Literacy Circles

Literacy Circles

Level  4 will begin Level Literacy reading circles next week.

They have been rehearsing the various roles and conducting practice sessions.

The students will have the opportunity to select the novel they read from a list. They are required to consider which novel is both interesting to them and is a good fit. Here is an example of one of the roles the students will focus on during the next month. Discussion Director
