GARDEN CLUB

GARDEN CLUB

Over the last few weeks we have harvested our corn, cucumbers and eggplants!

The children enjoy helping to water the plants, especially on a hot day!

The pumpkin patch has sprawled out and over into other garden beds and as you can see from the photos there are lots of pumpkins growing! There are two different types growing, Kent and Butternut. I saved the seeds from pumpkin that I had bought and cooked at home. I then planted them into a homemade planter and then planted 3 of the best seedlings into the garden at school.  I’m so pleased with how well they have grown and am looking forward to harvesting and cooking lots of delicious soups and roasted pumpkin.

GARDEN CLUB NEWS

Yesterday we had our first Garden Club for the year and we had lots of children coming to help pick all the delicious cherry tomatoes! They were enticed by the opportunity to not only pick them, but to take a small bagful home! I hope they weren’t squashed in the bottom of school bags!  Over the Summer holidays the corn, pumpkin and cucumbers grew like crazy! As you can see from the photos the corn is almost ready to pick and the pumpkins are growing.

BOOK FAIR NEWS

The Book Fair was a huge success!

The children had an exciting time looking at all the books and filling in their wish lists.

The total sales amounted to just over $4900!!

This equates to nearly $1600 worth of new resources for the library!

I am blown away by the generosity of parents and I want to say a huge thank you for supporting the book fair!

THE BOOK FAIR IS HERE!

THE BOOK FAIR IS HERE!

The children were soooo excited to come to the Book Fair today! Some children will see it next Monday. Look out for your child/ren’s wish list in their school bag.

On their wish list you will see the item name, the price and the location (BC1 or table). BC or bookcase indicates which number bookcase the item/s are from.

Below you will see photos of all the bookcases (numbered) so that you can see what your child/ren would like to buy. There is no obligation to buy, however every purchase earns the school a commission, which allows us to purchase more resources for the library. Please use this link to make a purchase https://parentpayments.scholastic.com.au/BookFairs and write the receipt number on the back of the wish list. Your child can then bring this to school and I can then send the items purchased home.  If there are any items that parents would like to purchase as gifts, please email me at whoneysett@htws.catholic.edu.au and I can make arrangements for you to pick up them up. Thank you for your suppport!

GARDENING CLUB

It was so lovely to have lots of helpers in the garden!

The weeds were growing taller than any of the plants!

Some before and after pics. Still more to do, but getting there!

We have some leeks and brussel sprouts growing! Very late in the season, but we’ll take whatever we can get! (Or eat!)

BOOK FAIR COMPETITION

BOOK FAIR COMPETITION

To create some excitement around the book fair there will be a ‘GUESS THE NUMBER OF PAGES’ competition. There will be a few books bundled together, which each child will have the opportunity to guess. The winner will be the one whose guess is the closest. There will be a winner awarded from each year level, with each winner receiving a $10 voucher to purchase a book at the book fair. I will print off a class list for each class to record each child’s guess. The winners will be announced next Thursday or Friday just before the Book Fair starts!

Years P-2 will guess a bundle of quick fiction books.

Years 3-6 will guess a bundle of ‘Funny Kid’ books.

EXCITING NEWS! THE BOOK FAIR IS COMING TO HOLY TRINITY!

From Friday November 5th to Wednesday November 10th

Scholastic

Although  COVID restrictions will prevent us from inviting parents to come and view the books with their child/ren, students will have an opportunity to look at the books during their normal library time! During their library time, they will have the opportunity to fill in a ‘wish-list’ indicating the book/s of their choice. The children will bring these home and parents will be able to review their child’s choices and if they wish to make a purchase, payment can be made online using the details below.

PLEASE NOTE: that due to COVID restrictions, we are unable to accept cash payments.

Orders will be delivered to students at school if possible. If there is a  high demand for a particular title it may be necessary for us to place the order with Scholastic and have it posted ASAP. Thanks for your understanding, we really benefit from holding the fair as we replenish the library with new books from the commission we earn. If any parent wishes to order book/s as presents, keep an eye out for the school blog, as I will be putting up photos of the books for your perusal.

The children that came to garden club really enjoyed picking and eating the fresh peas and mandarins!

They all left with a fresh lemon to take home and a few extra mandarins for their families! ( if they make it home!)

I’m very excited to announce that I won a competition run by SCIS on Facebook! I won all these fantastic books!

SCIS stands for Schools Catalogue Information Service and is the service used by  library staff to assist them to  catalogue their books.

To have a chance at winning I had to state why our library is special and this is what I wrote:

Our library is special because our students love coming to the library and reading and borrowing new books!

Holy Trinity Wantirna South would be so excited if we won some books!

Just before the holidays last year we planted squash and as you can see from the photos it has been going gang busters!

Although I think we’ve let them grow too big and they might end up being too tough!

The children helped me to plant potatoes last year and unfortunately they were ready to be harvested during the Summer holidays. I harvested approximately 40-50 potatoes and the one above is the largest of them.

It’s nice to see the echeverias and alyssum flowering!

The children and I planted the echeverias from cuttings and the alyssum were grown from seeds.

We also have a lot of weeds growing  and vegetables that have gone to seed.

So that means we have a lot of work to do over the coming weeks if we are to grow some Summer vegetables!  I need a lot of helpers to come and help! Garden Club happens every Friday afternoon at lunchtime and we have a lot of fun and it’s very rewarding to see the plants and flowers growing!

Weeds, weeds and more weeds!

Lots of silverbeets ready to harvest and the potatoes are growing well!

We’ll know the potatoes are ready to harvest when the leaves die off.

This kale has gone to seed. I wonder if the flowers are edible?

This is the alyssum the children planted as seeds.
