Home Learning is ‘up and running’

Home Learning is ‘up and running’

Hi everyone,

Welcome to term 2 – a completely new way of learning from outside the four walls of the school classroom. Today is a ‘settling in’ day like most of us would normally do for a new term. Our parents (who are also our first teachers) may need some guidance during the day as many of them have not been to primary school since the dinosaurs roamed the Earth (well maybe not that long).

Today, here is a simple activity for all parents to try to do sometime during today’s day of learning. I would like parents to take a picture of their child/ren completing some of their learning. It may be of them working at a desk, practising some meditation skills, watching a video that their teacher has shared with them or having a brain break doing one of Mrs. Harrison’s fantastic PE exercises.

I then would like parents to send this photo to their class teacher as a quick way of touching base with them. Class teachers may not necessarily reply to these emails as they will be teaching throughout the day but it is a nice way to show them that your child is engaged in our home learning program. I would love to put some of these photos onto the school blog as well so if you give permission for me to post a photo of your child/ren please CC me in on the email to the class teacher. My email address is smullavey@htws.catholic.edu.au

Please also note that the Prep to Year 2 online program will begin after the students have made their way through the pack that was provided at the end of last term.

Below is a list of all teaching staff’s email addresses for your reference.

Cheers and have a great day with your beautiful families.

5/6 Camp

5/6 Camp

At the moment in the 5/6 Level we are beginning to prepare for our 5/6 Camp that will take place early next term at the Alexandra Adventure Resort.

This week the year 5 students began thinking about who we would like to be in a dorm with for whilst at camp. Over the coming weeks we will find out more and more about what will take place at camp and many of us are already counting down the days before camp starts.

Here is a video about what the Alexandra Adventure Camp is like ….

Persuasive Writing in Year 5

Persuasive Writing in Year 5

In year five we have been learning about persuasive writing. Some of the topics that students in our class have been writing about include deforestation, pollution and smoking. We have been trying do develop how we structure our arguments so that each paragraph does not just begin with firstly, secondly, finally, etc.

Our group wrote about smoking and why it is not good for our health.

🏊 DISTRICT SWIMMING 2020 🏊

🏊 DISTRICT SWIMMING 2020 🏊

On Friday 21st February some students from years 3 to 6 were selected to represent HT & St. Mary’s at Kilsyth Centenary Pool to compete in the District Swimming competition.

This event was the culmination of many weeks of hard work where the students have been going to swimming training every Tuesday morning at 7.30 am at Knox Leisureworks.

The competition was really intense with lots of students getting very nervous before their races. Many of the students did well and it was amazing how well everyone did despite feeling so nervous.

After all the freestyle, breastroke, backstroke and butterfly events we participated in relay events which our school did really well at. Some of the swimmers were lucky enough to make it through to Divisional Competition which will take place on Wednesday 4th of March.

Well done to Tyrone who was rewarded for all of his hard work by earning the Age Group Champion for 12 year old boys.

Overall HT & St. Mary’s came first for the 10th time in a row with 105 points!

Congrats to everyone who represented HT at the District Swimming.

S.T.E.M. Lego Session

S.T.E.M. Lego Session

Yesterday, six students from years five and six were chosen to build a tower crane model. This model consists of three lego kits and over forty steps to complete. It stood roughly 0.6 meters tall and took an hour and a half to construct. We were lucky enough to have some special Lego Engineer teachers come in to work with us whilst we built this model which we were very thankful of because it was quite difficult to build.

Overall it was an enjoyable challenge working with people that are from different year levels.

Here are some pictures and videos of our models including a time lapse of the building process.

Four Square Competition for the School of the Air

Four Square Competition for the School of the Air

On Thursday the 28th of November Ashley, Lara and Blake.D held a 4 square competition to raise money for the kids in the School of the Air. Ash wanted to do the fundraiser for the school of the air because there are lots of kids that are a part of the school but they don’t get to go to a physical school and experience all the fun things we get to do. Ash and Lara were the first people to do a fundraiser for the school of the air. The competition ended up raising $87 in total which is a lot of money that can be used to help buy new learning resources for these kids.

The final winners were Bradley 1st place, Macca 2nd place and Tej 3rd place. Spencer earned the MVP (Most Valuable Player during the competition and Cara got an award for Team player.

Well done to Ashley, Lara and Blake D for all of your hard work with organising this competition (even organising some trophies).

Lego Presentations

Lego Presentations

As we are reaching the end of the school year so too are we reaching the end of our school Lego Engineers program for 2019. The students from years 3 to 6 have participated in this program to develop their skills and thinking based around the areas of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The students have a built a variety of different models from catapults to self flipping cars and moonwalking robots. Their skills and knowledge has developed massively in the two years I have been teaching this program and I thank all the students for their enthusiasm during Lego sessions throughout the year.

Over the last few weeks all classes from Years 3 to 6 have participated in a final Lego presentation session where they got to rebuild one of the Lego models taught throughout this year. In addition, each group created a presentation using the Explain Everything app where they showed how their model worked including explaining the forces used to help make the model function efficiently. The students from the prep to year 3 classes were lucky enough to view these presentations and they gave the groups a mark based on the following rubric.

Overall, the presentations were very positive and demonstrated how much the students had learned. Here are a few pictures of these presentations …….

Italian poetry/drama competition

Italian poetry/drama competition

On Wednesday 20th November a team of 14 students represented Holy Trinity in an Italian poetry/drama competition at St John the Baptist Primary School in Ferntree Gully. The students had to learn an Italian poem off by heart and present it to an audience using correct pronunciation, expression and drama skills. The students were all fantastic and I couldn’t be more proud of each and every one of them! The student with the highest score for HT was Isabella Bonato and the encouragement award was presented to Chloe Hall. Overall the team placed 3rd. A brilliant effort!

Our School Garden 🌼🐞🌱

Our School Garden 🌼🐞🌱

Recently at Holy Trinity the Environmental leaders have been work on weeding and replanting our veggie garden! Soon we will be able to harvest our lovely range of veggies and herbs. We will hopefully be cooking a wonderful dish in time for carols. Keep your eyes on the blog for more garden updates in the coming weeks!

Stay green thumbs. 🌱👍

Year 6 Swimming

Year 6 Swimming

On Tuesday the 12th of November the Year 6 students went to Knox Leisureworks to achieve their year 6 water safety certificate. Some of the skills that we needed to do to achieve this certificate included a 25m freestyle, 25m of another stroke and 5 minutes of treading water in clothes.

Mrs Harrison was proud of our efforts with swimming at primary school because so many of our student achieved the certificate.

Overall it was a fun day especially the water polo.

Minecraft Club

Minecraft Club

Every Friday students from Years 2 and 3 participate in HT’s Minecraft Club run by the DigiTech Leaders. We have been learning about the basics with using their Educational Minecraft accounts such as collecting resources, building and mining. Today all the students joined in the same world created by the DigiTech leaders and they searched for different resources. Everyone is having fun playing minecraft and we will continue playing it next term. We encourage the students to develop their skills further during the holidays when they use their accounts at home.

Here are a few photos of today’s session …….

Digitech Sessions (The Ozobots have landed at HT!!!)

Digitech Sessions (The Ozobots have landed at HT!!!)

Over the last few weeks the students in Digitech have been learning to code using our Ozobots. An Ozobot in a small robot the responds to different colours – mainly red, green, blue and black. When you draw these codes together in different sequences it can make the Ozobot move in different ways. Some of our favourite moves so far have been the Nitro boost (fast speed), tornado (spin around) and backwalk (go backwards) and pause 3 seconds.

Our latest task requires the students to make the Ozobot do a series of moves including right and left turns, change speeds and do a ‘cool’ move such as the backwalk. Another task required the students to complete a bowling challenge where the Ozobot needed to knock over some bowling pins. These challenges  certainly got our brains going.

Here are the students in action during our Ozobot sessions ….

Lego Lessons

Lego Lessons

In lego lessons this term the students in years 4, 5 and 6 have been learning how to build lots of different models such as  a moonwalking robot, a battle tank and a remote control car that can be coded with your Chromebook.

In these lessons we practise working together with in a group, following instructions carefully on a sheet and learning about some of the different forces used to make these models work.

Overall, Lego lessons are really fun and they teach you lots about some of the different machines we use in our lives.

Countries Around The World

Countries Around The World

Currently in 6 Blue we have been learning about different countries from around the world. We have been doing this so we can get a better understanding of different cultures as well as what their climate, landscapes and food is like. For my project I chose Germany because that was where my Pop was born.  In addition we had a choice to pick any other country and I chose Germany because even though I knew a bit I really wanted to find out more.

Here is a few pictures of our draft and published copy of our writing.

Year 6 Confirmation

Year 6 Confirmation

In Week 1 of this term our Year 6 celebrated a special milestone in our lives by receiving the sacrament of Confirmation.

We had been preparing for Confirmation since last term with researching a special saint as well as learning about the Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit. On Thursday the 18th July all the Year 6s students went to St Jude’s Parish to prepare for this special day by having a Spirit day.  During this day we completed a series of activities aimed at preparing us for our Confirmation as well as practising for the ceremony at St. Jude’s Church. Monsignor Ireland also came to visit us during the day and spoke to us about the importance of Confirmation as well as easing our nerves leading up to the day. We were lucky enough to have pizzas for lunch and play down ball and basketball during our break times.

We celebrated our Confirmation with the Year 6’s from St. Jude’s on Saturday 20 July where we all had  a lantern and stole. When we received our Confirmation Monsignor Ireland blessed each of the candidates and called them by their chosen saint name. Overall, it was a very special day and we will treasure this special event for the rest of our lives.

Here are some photos of the occasion ……

5 Blue Geography

5 Blue Geography

This term in 5 Blue we are learning about other countries in our Inquiry topic where we are focussing on Geography. We are drawing maps of some different countries around our world using a group of key points which help us to remember what we need to include called BOLTSS (border, orientation, legend, scale and source). We are placing these maps into a slide show that we are creating about a chosen country in Europe.

These are some of our hand drawn maps.…..

TORCH Bearers of Term 2

TORCH Bearers of Term 2

This afternoon at assembly our TORCH bearers of the term were awarded to one special person in each level who displays each of our TORCH values. Our TORCH values of tolerance (T), optimism (O), respect (R), confidence (C) and honesty (H) are at the heart of what we teach at Holy Trinity and provide our students with practical examples of how to live out of school motto of ‘Love One Another’.

Congratulations to Owen (Prep), Tyler (1/2), Olivia (3/4) and Anneliese (5/6) for being such fantastic recipients of the TORCH Bearers for term 2.

St Vincent De Paul Donations and Feast of the Sacred Heart Mass

St Vincent De Paul Donations and Feast of the Sacred Heart Mass

Over the past few weeks we have been collecting items such as canned and packaged food that does not go off, toiletries, blankets and other items for the people in our community who are not as lucky as we are. The outcome was that we had almost two cars boots full of goods for St. Vincent de Paul. At Mass today we celebrated the Feast of the ‘Sacred Heart’ where we brought up some of these donations during the offertory procession. Fr Longinus taught us about how this feast is a celebration of love we have in our community and how God loves us. The donations we have raised for the poor demonstrates how much we display our school motto of ‘Love One Another’ for those in need. Great stuff everyone on your fantastic fundraising!
